I know that it makes games smoother and less choppy but do you have in game vsync on or off? Because I have it enabled and I ran thief and it was going over 60 fps giving me screen tearing so I turned vsync on and it capped the fps so will adaptive still work since in game vsync is on or does that defeat the purpose? Because it still feels hella smooth. One thing I hate is screen tearing and the high pitch squeel from the gpu when vysnc is off.

For adaptive vsync to work you need it enabled in the nvidia control panel, make sure that the profile for the game in manage 3d settings has it enabled too and then disable vsync in game. There should be an option for preferred refresh rate in manage 3d settings as well which you should set to highest available. I've not tried this in thief but it's worked for everything else I've tried.
