Add 2nd CPU - OS Rebuild?

If you add a second processor to a Xeon server, would you have to reinstall the OS (Server 2003 Standard) in order for Windows to recognise the second CPU?

I know you had to rebuild when changin from a standard P4 to a Hyperthreading P4 on XP..

I dont think you aneed to check it in the bios then check it in hardware manager it should be recognised

Sweet. I'm sure I remember XP not showing 2 CPUs in Task Manager when I got my first HT CPU??

Probably had a BIOS with duff Plug'n'Play. Windows relies on the BIOS to inform it that an additional processor has been installed/enabled. If this doesn't happen then Windows doesn't install the SMP HAL.

Basically when it works right you get one of those "Hardware Change Detected" dialogs. It takes about 30 seconds to do some stuff and then you have to reboot. After the reboot you have a multi-CPU aware Windows

You can do it manually through Device Manager also.

yes you need to go into the BIOS make sure its enabled the go into hardware device manager and change the computer to a ACPI Multiprocessor PC
