Adding a 8400 to tide me over until a 590

Hey all,

I used to run 2x8800GTX for triple head until one konked out on me. I cant justify spending £700 on a GPU right now, so I was just planning on getting

To throw in the system until I can afford the 590. I dont plan to do gaming until I get the 590.

Am I right in thinking there should be no problems running a 8800 and 8400 (NOT in SLI) in order to facilitate 3 monitors?

Why not just get a Sapphire 5850 Extreme if you are on a tight budget? It's only just a bit over £100, highly overclockable (most will overclocked from 725MHz to 900MHz) and will handle most games at 1920 res with 4xAA at ease, plus it can support 3 monitors by itself (when I say support, I mean for general usage not gaming across 3 monitors), provided that you got the right connections.

5850 is faster than 8800GTX SLI by the way.

What do you use the 8400 for? It doesn't seem to be listed capable of dedicated PhysX on nvidia's website.

To be honest GTX590 is a bad choice. I'd go for a pair of cheap GTX580 instead. (actually the best bang for the buck is a pair of 6950 2GB in crossfire)

BTW, I don't recommend keep buying graphics cards with less than 1.5GB vram from now on. Save the money for greater good.

8400 in order to facilitate the 3rd monitor until payday, we all know you can only power 2 monitors of a single 8800 - hence the ridiculously low spec card with it being a 4 week throwaway item.

The reason I'm getting a 590 is because of the single board design. My mobo isnt suitable for SLI unless its watercooled and I have no intention of adding a loop to the system.

And unfortunately for my wallet - I'm a NVidia fanboy. I've had enough bad experiences with ATI Drivers and cards :(

I assume you're waiting for the re-designed 590's which seem to be on the horizon?

Exactly. I was going to buy one of the original ones until I heard they were literally blazing fast.

Just to emphasize: I am not adding the 8400 for any increase in performance, merely to facilitate a 3rd monitor!
