I have been thinking of adding a Physx card to my set up. Should I do it and if so which card should I buy.

I have a 5870 and game at 1920 x 1080. I will mainly be playing Shogun 2, DCS A10, Cliffs of Dover and maybe a few FPS.

I have been looking at
OcUK GeForce GT 440 1024MB GDDR3 £59.99 or
MSI GeForce GT 430 OC Twin FrozR 1024MB £64.99.

Could anyone give me a bit of feedback.
Many Thanks
Dave

Firstly and most importantly, its not worth having. Secondly Nvidia want you to buy a high end card to run the FizzX efEctXz that 99% of games don't support anyway. Last time I looked they had gimped the tech in such a way you needed a GTX285/GTX465 to run the high level effects but if the driver catchs wind of any ATI hardware the FizzX card has a tantrum and halts any ongoing FizzX failure until the ATI card is removed and the system has been fully sterilised.

Thanks for the quick replies. I had a quick look and I'm not sure the games I will be playing support physx. I think my best option is to put the money towards a full next gen GPU upgrade in 6 to 12 months time.
Thanks
Dave

This is a highly accurate representation of the situation. On top of that, I don't think any of the games you've listed use it anyway.

I tried this once a year back and it didn't work out so well. Apparently it use to be fine until they altered the drivers. The majority of games don't make use of it and the few that do often don't use it heavily.

I would save yourself the hassle tbh

It's a shame because it seems like it could really add to the gaming experience if implemented properly, however at the moment there really doesn't seem to be much effort being put into doing so.

Yep, that's about the truth of it. I've tried a second card twice now to see if was ever worth doing. First time was with my GTX285 (main card) and a 8800 as the Physx card. All that happened was that my system was louder, and I'd swear performance was lower.

Second time was last week after upgrading to the 480 SOC that was on offer. I then tried my 285 as the Physx card. I benchmarked Mafia 2. I got 2 fps extra. I'd have to say that I'm sure the minimum framerate was higher, but that was based on visual observation (Mafia 2 doesn't give you very much in the way of information with the benchmark).

Physx needs to die a quick and painful death really.

Physx simply needs to be made open source by nVidia, as they have crippled it in it's current iteration. The idea is good, the boys in green have just shafted the implementation.

Hmm

I done 280GTX and a 8800 GTS for Batman AA when it was released. There was a definite noticable performance increase from using the 280 gtx on its own.

Its the only game i used it with so i cant comment on others but there was an improvment over not having one.

Although now im running a 580GTX ive yet to try running the 280gtx for the physx.
