Adding Acoustic Plasterboard Layers

Right, following from my previous thread, I have decided the cheapest and easiest way to go with basic soundproofing is to double skin some plasterboard over my old plasterboard. As I live in a flat, the scope for upgrading is very limited, so I have decided to go for 2 layers of acoustic plasterboard 15mm (most likely British Gypsum Gyproc Soundbloc) using Green Glue as sealant.
This is what I'm thinking

  • Adding the first layer of plasterboard to the wall with plasterboard adhesive.
  • Sealing all edges and gaps with Green Glue sealant.
  • Applying Green Glue adhesive to the second layer of plasterboard and sticking to 1st layer.
  • Sealing all gaps with GG sealant

Any thoughts on this? I can't upgrade the plasterboard/stud wall unfortunately due to the building regulations and pipework/electrics behind the wall, but I think this solution will block some of the sound out; enough at least for me to relax.

I'm not an expert on sound attenuation, but some of the techniques I've seen recommended include making sure that the joints between boards are staggered and that you isolate the board from the floor and ceiling with a strip of foam. It might also be worth using two different thicknesses of plasterboard; I seem to remember reading that has a positive effect for sound attenuation.

I also have in mind that an air gap between the existing wall and new plasterboard would help too.
