I'll start by saying i know naff all about diesels, or turbochargers for that matter.

I just started using a rover 220 Turbo Diesel for my run to work as it's gonna save me around £80 - £90 a month on fuel running my Capri for the same trip, however the Rover is the most sluggish thing i have ever driven.

It turns out its not got an intercooler, which i thought it should have being a 1996/97 car, which from what i gather gives me about 80BHP and around 116LB/ft of torque, rather than the 103HP & 155LB/ft i was expecting.

Physically mounting an intercooler behind the bumper is no problem, but is it really as simple as it seems, just plumbing it in after the turbo?

Or is there a lot more to it?

As a car bought to save money, is it really worth unnecessarily spending on it?
Yes it is.
Make the rover amazing and fall in love with it.
Then pleeaaaassseee sell me your capri <3

If it's as simple as just connecting one up after the turbo & i have to make no other changes then it's gonna cost me next to nothing, i can probably get one off of a scrapped car for free & just have to worry about a bit of pipework.

And yes it probably would be worth spending £50 or so as at the moment all putting my foot down does is create a cloud of black smoke.

Heh, it already is amazing, amazingly slow, cant complain at the fuel economy though, stuck £10 in it and done 45ish miles & the fuel gauge has barely moved, however stick £10 in the Capri and i would have ran out around about the 40 miles mark.

try a 1 litre micra with 59HP and 59LB of torque. you dont even KNOW the meaning of the word slow :p

Drove my sisters Daewoo Matiz. 800cc and 50bhp of pure power :p

To be honest upto 30 it was fine, get noisey at 40 and very noisey at 50 but was quite impressed.

lol i maxed mine out in 3rd at 81mph and got to 97mph in 4th, it didnt max it out but the petrol dial was moving!! 5th gear has very little power but wipes the floor with any other 1 litre that was designed n 1993. 16v twin cam oooo sporty :p

they did an intercooled version of this one

find a crashed one, remove everything you need, noting how it goes together

should be simple!

I would do what Saytan mentions, this is very common mod on the 90bhp 2L HDI Pug engine, the 110bhp version was identical bar the FMIC so plenty of people have swapped them over.

However one thing I would check first is I'm not sure if the Rover will have a MAF I would have thought it would, these are common for going on pretty much every other diesel car I know so it may be an idea to check. On VAG engines what you would do is disconnect it and take it for a drive if it gives better performance you need to replace it.
