Adding another card?

I'm thinking about adding another card mainly so I can add another monitor but not very knowledgeable about this type of thing I'm totally unsure what type to add or if I can add one at all. The card that is currently in it goes into the PCIE x16 card socket but there is a free PCIE x8 card and PCIE2 x1 one. Though I don't know if I can put another card into those or what type would fit there.

If not is there another way I could add another monitor without adding a Graphics card.

Does your current card have 2 ports on the back or one?
what do you use your pc for?
how much do you want to spend
what type of motherbord do you have?
and what is your current card?

Yeah sorry I was a bit lacking on the information.

I'm pretty sure the card currently installed is the ati radeon hd 3870. It has 2 ports at the back but I use both of them. I'm looking to add a third monitor. One is connected via hdmi cable to a tv and the other to a standard monitor. I am looking to install just another monitor. I think the monitor only has VGA output. The main reason I want another screen is for work I use spreadsheets and other things though I am quite messy and would prefer to see most things at the one time across the screens. I do also quite enjoy simulator games and I know the likes of flight sim have support for a number of monitors and if I can get that to work okay as well it would be a bonus. I'm not sure about the motherboard.
