Adding another SSD?

Hi,

I currently have a Samsung 250GB SSD drive and I've already gone through most of it with the OS/Games/Music etc. I was thinking of adding another 250GB to keep me going. I've heard about RAID but not sure what it does etc. What would be the best way of setting up two SSD drives? Thanks.

If you were to get another one, youd be using RAID 0. It basically combines both drives together to form one.
This may seem good to you as youd get twice the speed (theoretically atleast) as data is written to BOTH drives BUT, this means you have two times the chance of failure.
Also, the only way to do a RAID 0 is to erase all data on your SSD.

Id just stick the new SSD in and use it as a seperate drive. No technical difficulty and youre up and running in seconds.

I had this same problem but I decided instead of getting a new SSD I would get a VelociRaptor HDD and I have to say I am glad I did. Sure it is not as fast as SSD but games still have quite snappy load times and I have 1TB to play with so thats a lot of games + a lot cheaper than an SSD of 250GB. Have a think about it anyway, if you really need SSD speed then there is nothing for it, you need to buy another one, RAID is what the real hardcore gamers use I recall.

Thanks, I may just plug it in an use it as a separate drive. When you say twice the likelihood of failure is that due to running it on RAID or if one fails it takes both drives with it?

When running it in RAID 0, it will use both drives simultaneously. Therefore, if one drive were to fail, half the data is gone which would mean all your data is corrupted and unusable.
One drive failing will take both out.
And like I said, youd have to move everything on your existing SSD to another media to setup RAID.
Just stick with keeping it as a seperate drive. Speeds are fast enough and arent really worth the hassle and worry of RAID 0.

This :)

No need to complicate things with RAID really, unless you're after that last few % of performance and can afford to lose everything (or have a good backup plan in place).

Of course you can still lose everything, but it's twice as likely with RAID0 since you only have to lose one of the two drives to lose all of your data.

Im also thinking of doing this BTW.
I already have a 256GB Sammy 840 Pro for OS, main games and programs but would like another to store the remaining games I have and for general media.
