Adding more RAM to OC system

Hi guys, im new to the forum and to the whole overclocking thing. I bought a pre-overclocked bundle from overclocks a bit back and it came with 6gb of ram which I thought would be enough for what I wanted to do. However doing my work on it recently has shown that I need more ram so looking to add another 6GB but im unsure of how to go about it. Would I have to redo the overclock on the processor, etc?
The gear I've got in my computer is:

CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4GHz

Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E

RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel

PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W Power Supply

If there are anymore details you guys need let me know and I'll post them up.

Cheers

i bought an overclocked bundle too mate, it was only 4 gig at the time and wasnt running at my full 1600mhz with there overclock. after fiddling. now im on 4.05ghz and 1600mhz stable. was a ballache, the overclockers overclock was very badly set. so you might have a lot of fiddling !

cheers for the reply, I was hoping that wasn't the case, as I have never overclocked anything. But I suppose its never to late to learn. I dont think i can avoid it, I really do need the extra RAM. However according to CPU-Z my RAM is running at the full stock speeds.

You should read up on overclocking, look in the BIOS and note down all the OC settings. Then reset the BIOS to factory defaults before inserting the new memory.

The memory should be roughly of the same type, with the same voltages and frequency. Once the memory is installed, re-apply all the settings again.

I had heard that said a few time, would it be stable or would some slight tweeks be needed, also not sure but I think a couple of ram settings may have been changed so would have write those down to?

i have a friend whos really good at overclocking mate, he will be able to help you over the phone, teamspeak or msn. whatever u want. hes a very smart guy. If you get your new ram and have troubles let me know and ill get his information for you, he wont mind at all.

Cheers Leeroy that would be great, I'll be getting the ram in a few weeks, so If I have any problems I'll post it up on this thread.

Thanks again

Well guys I got my ram today and just plugged it straight in and touch wood it seems to working fine, everything is recognised. The DRAM LED comes on when I turn the comp on but I think it did that with 6GB anyway. So im running on 12GB fine....I did a stress test for a hour just to do a quick test and did find that compared to others with a similar set up to me my processor is getting verryyyyyy hot. Some people getting max temp at 75C mine was hitting 80-90C (Using CPUID Hardware Monitor) could this be due to the OC settings OCUK set? I have noticed the other guys Core Voltage is about 1.25 and mines at 1.336. Idle im running at 38-45C.

Any tips or hints would be great.

Cheers

I got the overclocked i7 930 bundle aswell last year and when i checked the temps they were hitting 90s a few mins into the stress test, checked the oc settings that overclockers did and they only changed about 4 different things in the bios! Decided to read a few guides and do it myself and ended up with near 4ghz with temps of around 75c

There is a reason why it states "Please note that adding in additional memory to the spare slots will require new BIOS settings and the maximum clock speed attainable may be significantly reduced".

Generally speaking, it takes a higher amount of volts to power extra RAM sockets and makes the bridge work harder (hence higher temperatures), and adding RAM to an already OC'd system usually requires BIOS settings changes. I'd suggest defaulting the settings and starting from scratch, or at least lower the overclock until it is stable at lower temps.

Edit: Be very careful just running at settings the way you are. You could be heavily overvolting your RAM. You may be able to achieve a similar OC as you had before at a lower voltage than you're using. You may also be able to keep the one you have, and just sort out better cooling. Every CPU and RAM stick is different, you should always work from the bottom up though. Guess work breaks hardware. :)

Hi kaeo

well i know the settings havnt been changed. But the system seems stable. Ive done some stress tests and some rendering and all seems fine. The settings are the same that OCUK gave it. Also the temps I am reacting is no different before i put the ram in. At 6gb ram the cpu was still hitting 90C after a period of stress testing. I dont really know what would need changing. Only thing i can think of is getting 2 viper fans on the h50 radiator block.

also kingshaun yeh that sounds pretty much like my bios settings how they look now. Doesnt look like must has been changed. Just the volts and multipler. Any suggest any good places to start looking for oc guides for my set up? Would love to get it same speeds as i have now but with lower temps. But at idle is runs cool ish so im not in a rush to change anything. But would be ideal to tweak it.
