Adding RAID to existing install

My common sense could well have deserted me again, but i'm looking to add a 2 x 320GB drive RAID0 array to my existing build (One single 320GB boot drive).

I want the array seperate from the boot drive, so I have my 320GB OS drive, and then a seperate 640GB RAID0 volume in windows. Now I set my SATA configuration to RAID, pop into the Intel manager and setup the array, make sure its still booting off the right drive and upon loading windows it BSOD's (so brief you almost cant see it) and restarts the loop again. As soon as i set the SATA configuration to IDE it works fine, though obviously without the array.

So can this be done with the ICH10R onboard controller? Or do I have to have all sata ports RAID or IDE no exceptions?

I know that's true of the ICH9R - I haven't yet encountered an ICH10R, but I would imagine it's the same.

What you're encountering is typical of what happens when you change the Windows system drive from IDE emulation mode to AHCI or RAID *after* the OS has been installed - if you want to avoid a reinstall, you could follow the instructions here and see how you get on. :)

Indeed seems an impossibility with a current install. So i've backed everything up and i'm just going to go with the original plan of installing Vista64 onto the RAID volume. Unfortunately it's screwing up part way through the expanding files stage (works fine if not installing to a RAID volume) and it won't recognise any RAID drivers i've found so far as being properly signed.

And I was lead to believe this would be easy :(

A week ago I followed a guide to do exactly what you want to do with my ICH10R based mobo. I first went from IDE -> AHCI then AHCI -> RAID and each time things worked with no further issues and NO reinstall of Windows. It's possible to go straight from IDE -> RAID if needed.

I can't give a direct link to the other site featuring the guide as it's one of the blocked addresses. The best I can do (without extensive copy-pasting and reformating) is this...

1) http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Ho...+without+reinstalling+windows+(P35/ICH9/ICH9R)

2) Click the first link and wait for the site to load.

3) Click page 4 once that site finishes loading.

4) In the first post, scroll down **slightly** until you see Originally Posted by mizaring "Here's the update for Intel ICH10 on Windows XP to enable BOTH AHCI & RAID at the same time...."

5) Read through mizaring's post a few times and then put it into action :)

6) If you need instructions for Vista then I'm sure if you keep following that thread then someone's bound to have covered it.
