Hello!

I currently have an 3700x and x570 Aorus Pro with 2x Gen 3 NVMe in the on board m.2 slots, and two ssd sata drives.

I have an additional 2x Gen 3 drives lying around that I want to add with PCIe adaptors to replace either one or both sata drives.

See below for extract from mb manual:
3rd Generation AMD Ryzen™ processors:
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x16 (PCIEX16)
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x8 (PCIEX8)

2nd Generation AMD Ryzen™ processors:
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 3.0 and running at x16 (PCIEX16)
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 3.0 and running at x8 (PCIEX8)
* For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot. *
The PCIEX8 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16 slot. When using the 3rd Generation AMD Ryzen™ processors/2nd Generation AMD Ryzen™ processors, the PCIEX16 slot operates at up to x8 mode

Does the part highlighted in bold apply for 3rd gen CPU's too or is that specific to gen 2?

Can I add the other two m.2 drives with PCIe adaptors in the x4 and x8 slot without impacting my 3080's performance in the x16 slot?

Looks like your top x16 runs at 8x if you use the lower 8x i don't think it matters what processor is in there its how the pcie slots are wired

Only HEDT platforms like Threadripper have enough PCIe lanes for multiple high lane count slots.
Only slots with x4 wiring are doable on desktop platform without stealing lanes from main GPU slot.
And in this particular board you have only two PCIe slots usable without affecting it/getting blocked by GPU.

For second M.2 you could use PCIe x1 slot adapter like this:

That would give ~1GB/s bandwidth for PCIe v3 drive.

Though with 3080 being PCIe v4 card slot dropping to x8 would still have same bandwidth as PCIe v3 x16 slot and minimize performance difference.

Thank you all especially EsaT, feels good to understand it all a bit better. I'm going to go with a Asus Hyper in the x8 slot and have the x16 slot drop to x8.

Only reason for using these over the SATA SSD's I already have is that I want to donate those to a family member who's motherboard has no m.2 slots, and I need to get that space back.
