additional sound card or not?

A massive quality difference and more features.
huge difference - i got a £15 sound card once, it broke after 2 days but it was much better than the onboard...
why the D2X, though?
It is good, but unless you need DTS instead of DDL (if you don't know what they are, you don't), you might be just as well off with the DX

no not got a clue what the difference is but as i've already bought the d2x was wondering if i should keep it or flog it on.
The UD5 has some nice Dolby Home Theatre features. TBH, I would have said a DX or D2X would sound better than the onboard audio found on the UD5, but I saw a thread not long back, where someone had the same board. He bought a DX, and was disappointed because he thought the sound quality was no better than the UD5's onboard audio. Seems different people have different experiences with HD onboard audio compared to a dedicated sound card. I say HD onboard audio, because that separates it from the older inferior AC97. For some a dedicated sound card is easily better, whereas for some, the difference is barely noticeable it seems.

Why not see what you think? Some people will hardly notice.
i mainly want it for use with the blueray player i have with it . might have a bit of a problem sorting out how to connect the surround sound speaker system as the sound card has individual inputs for each speaker and the surround system has individal inputs as well.
