Addressing job applications

Quick question.

I'm applying for a teaching position, and the email address is just [email protected]

Now, I could either address it to the Head, the Deputy Head, or the admin woman responsible for staff contracts.
Alternatively, I could just write "to whom it may concern"

Or I could just phone them up and ask to whom it should be addressed..

Opinions?

I'd phone them up then you can address it appropriately - male / female, their title. Shows you've done a little research at least if you can get a name and title.

This was my initial thought.
Using the web site I've narrowed it down to sex, but that's about it

I'd always do this if possible. Shows a bit of initiative and is a nice touch.

look on the school website and address it to the head teacher.

he/she is the one who appoints members of staff.

You say that, but at another (international) school, applications were to be sent to the middle school deputy head.
And at my current school, some jobs applications are sent to the head, and some are some to a deputy.
But it's clearly stated.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Don't address it to the head teacher, they have their own email address. The jobs@ email address has been specifically assigned so one or more people who recruit can see the mailbox and handle/screen your application.

Yeah I know why they've done it, but it's annoying as I want to address it specifically to someone.
Same with the letter of application.

Having been through the staff list, I can guarantee they're all women.

How about your covering letter addressed to the head and the generic form sent to who it says.

It is what i have done when I have applied for teaching jobs, and what I was advised to do on my PGCE course.

To whom it may concern it is then. They all sound american anyway.
And Sir/Madam is irrelevant because they're all women.
