Adjusting RAM timings

Sorry if this is really obvious, but could someone give me a step-by-step guide to changing my RAM setting to make use of the full speed?

I have a MSI GD53 motherboard and Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz ram, but I think it is currently running at default.

How can I get the RAM to run at 1600MHz?

Edit: Will this work: Enter Bios, click 'overclocking', change 'DRAM Frequency' from auto to 1600MHz.? Do I need to change other settings?

Had a similar problem with my vengeance, it was only running at 1300mhz rather than the 1600mhz stock speed, turned out I had to set the memory profile to XMP in bios...

yes that will work

not sure if your ram has a xmp profile? if it has use that and it will do it automaticlay

also set the voltage for the ram manually if it isn't the correct voltage on auto

I just ran the bios memory test after enabling XMP and it failed. The DRAM voltage setting is 1.472 currently.

Can you link me to any simple guide which tells me which setting to change, etc?

Edit: Can I just change the DRAM frequrncy to 1600Mhz and up the voltage to 1.5-1.6v or do I have to go into the Advanced DRAM Configuration screen to change the timings? That is the bit that I'm finding confusing...

it's rated for 1.65v

are you on a sandybridge system? if so try 1.55v-1.6v

if not then put it at 1.65v manually

you can also adjust the timings manually if you wanted, thats if they are not correct

but xmp profile should have settings that are correct for the ram, bit odd if not
 
Thanks whipgeez, I'm OK with changing the DRAM frequency and voltage, but not sure what I need to change re: timings.

The Advanced DRAM config tab takes me into a list with:
Command Rate
tCL
tRCD
tRP
...etc

I've no clue which settings I need to change. I've tried a google search, but still remain puzzled.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm on Sandybridge, so would like to keep the voltage as low as possible.
 
ok, try using the xmp profile again

it should have correct settings

if it comes back the same then try manually putting the volts to 1.55 and see if it works with that voltage
 
OK, I enabled xmp and manually changed the voltage to 1.55. That passed the bios memory test, now I'll run memtest to see how that goes.

Glad you got it sorted, I'm pretty sure while I was researching what memory to buy for my SB setup, the specifications said something about the memory should run at 1.5v with a max gain of +5%, so you could even try dial back to 1.5v at test stability...
 
If you want to manually set timings then this may help:

Latency 9-9-9-24 (which is what your RAM is) refers to:
CAS# Latency (CL): 9.0 clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD): 9 clocks
RAS# Precharge (tRP): 9 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS): 24 clocks

Thanks for that - i've got the same setup as the OP and have been trying to sort the RAM timings/voltage/frequency. I got to that advanced ram config page and got very confused :confused:
