Annoy? Hardly. Had no-one mentioned it I would probably never have known. I can think of other anti-spam measures (CAPTCHAs, for one) that are far more inconvenient than this is.

Perhaps a one-line description on the page would make it less confusing - but that might defeat the anti-spam point.

It should be in the same section as the other details at least.

Usability should be the first thing to look at even before spam issues.
