ADSL 1st timer

I have just moved into a new apartment and cable is not connected, so for the first time in my life i'm having to ADSL.

Im in the process of setting up the BT line, but have no idea re: adsl providers.

i am a heavy internet user using ubuntu (all programs etc.. have to be downloaded), I regulary download linux distros and use iplayer etc..

I'm looking for a cheap package with no GB limits.

Any recommendations?

P.s I don't have a TV so Sky is no good.

I cant comment personally, but going by what I read on these boards Id guess a lot of people will probably suggest Be if you can get it.

Go to http://www.samknows.com/ and see what LLU services are available first and we can go from there.

if no LLU then try ADSL24, there are limits but they are spelt out before you start and quite big!

Damn turns out my phone line is not active. If I pay BT to do it, i'm stuck on an 18month contract when i'm only at the property for 6months.

Ideally I i don't want to pay a seperate a line rental anyway. Tiscali said they would connect my line for £30 and my total phone and broadband package would be £14.99 (after 3 months at £9.99) - they also said it would only take around 4 days to connect the line.

However i've heard hundreds of nightmare stories re: tiscali, but they seem like the only company that will connect the line.

Almost all the LLU suppliers in NOrwich are owned by Tiscali:
Tiscali
Pipex
Buldog

The only one that isn't is talktalk

Any other suggestions? I can't keep using 3 broadband it's absoulute pants here.

Go for Sky/Ukonline broadband. Fairly decent, fairly cheap and as you have LLU access, completely unlimited.

Do you know if UKonline will get the line activated via open reach for me? PO and tiscali will. Also I spoke to ske earlier who said they could line activated but i would have to have an 18month BT contract. The whole point is that I don't want a BT contract

You'll have to have a 12 month BT contract at the very least. Any ISP that says you won't have to pay for the phoneline (except Virgin Media) is just absorbing the cost of the phoneline rental in some way or another. Apparently you can get Sky to refund your line install fee (£130 for a BT line if you avoid the 18 month contract, unless you are willing to spend time talking them round - I've avoided 3 line install fees so far) - just make sure that you get confirmation from Sky that they'll do this first.

Had a good chat with AVUK how setup sky installations etc..

They can organise the landline and will refund the connection fee so then i'd only need a 12month BT contract.

Still it works out quite expensive:
BT line £10.50 - £126
SKyTV £16 - £192
Broadband £5 - £60

Total £378 per year.

Compared to £165 for Tiscali (plus £30 connection) - cheaper to pay off it all goes **** up.

Talktalk is a similar price to the above with a slightly better reputation but aren't interesting in activating new lines.

its bloody annoying.
