ADSL Max queries

I know there has been a lot on this board about ADSL Max recently so I thought I would ask some questions. At the moment I am on 1Mbps Eclipse ADSL, I am considering upgrading to ADSLMax but the BT checker shows that I can only get 1.5Mpbs or greater.

At the moment I have a DG834v2 (wired) plugged into the front of the master socket in our house and normally the figure for line atten is 53-56db and an SNR of 11-15db.

I thought I would check the figures plugged into the test socket (behind faceplate of master socket) and I am getting a line atten of 53db and an SNR of 23db which I think is a massive increase. When I put my figures into the max speed checkers (mentioned in other posts I have read) these figures give me a max speed of over 5Mbps which is a big increase over the other figures.

I know ADSLMax depends on the SNR mainly but it's all guess work anyway. Would I be better to get my dad (ex BT engineer) to have a look at the extensions on our line or just carry on using the test socket and see what I get (not sure if parents would be too happy only using the phone upstairs)?

The only thing I am worried about is being able to get a faster speed given the improved figures but then plugging the rest back in and having the connection constantly dropping/being unstable.

Sorry for the long post.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,

It does work on SNR, so yes - plugging the modem into the test socket and getting Max would increase your sync rate.

As soon as you move it back, it will still try to get the same SNR, thus reducing your sync rate.

Sounds like your extension wiring is causing some unecessary problems, so it might be best getting it looked at.

Actually, just re-reading your post. You say that the modem's actually always plugged into the master socket - so one thing that would definitely benefit you is getting a faceplate filter. This filters the ADSL before it even goes to the extensions and gives you two sockets on your master socket (one for ADSL, one for phone), so it should solve all your problems.

It also means that no other extensions need microfilters.

EDIT: Have a read of this http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm
