ADSL "Max" question

I've recently gone from standard ADSL to ADSL "Max" which allows up to 8Mb downstream. The change happened last Friday (a week ago today), and i immediately noticed my DG834G was reporting to be connected at 8128kbps up, and 448kbps down. Perfect.

Here i am a week later, running tests like speedtest etc, and all of them are reporting downstreams of around 1900kbps (which is the bit that confuses me), and upstreams of 380kbps (fine...).

Im close to the exchange, my line attenuation is 19db and my noise margin is 13db which i believe is pretty good - i just don't get why i can only download at 2Mb speeds rather than nearer 8Mb! Have had no disconnections whatsoever since "Max" was enabled on my line...

Any help?

It's nothing to do with your line if it's synching at 8128 kbps.

The BT Speedtest (FAQ) should give you your IP profile. You'll probably find it's 2Mbps.
If it's been stable for a week and it is still stuck at 2Mbps, you should phone your ISP and get them to get BT to unstick it. They'll no doubt hide behind the "wait 10 days" getout though.

please remember that it takes a full 10days before it will set your profile

Does it hell.

If it hasn't changed by now, it's time to start poking your ISP with a stick - though I wouldn't expect to get much sense out of them either this near to or on NYD.

So, chances are for some reason (must point out that the router has been switched off 3/4 times in the past week, but no more!) it has stuck at 2Mb and im screwed as Orange "CS" are useless and won't give me any help at all? :(

Pretty much, if it's stuck. You should try the BT Speedtest first to make sure it is actually stuck and isn't just congestion (though it would be extremely...convenient to just go to 2Mbps).

Okey doke - is this the speedtest at http://speedtester.bt.com/ ?

I tried entering my phone number, then it asked for "Additional Information" username with which i had no idea what to enter.

In order to confirm that the telephone number entered previously co-responds to correct account on the network, can you please enter your normal login name below,(e.g. [email protected]) and then click GO

Tried my ISP email address ([email protected]) with no luck...any ideas on what i should be entering in the box or am i on the wrong page? :p

Error:
The login name entered on this tool doesnt match that discovered by querying the network for your domain name. Please check your telephone number (or user name) and try again. If problem persists please contact your ISP.

Right, i got it.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1825 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Yup, you're stuck on a 2Mbps profile, only real option is to contact your ISP and get them to unstick it as Tolien says :)

Just did that. Got the usual foboff, unfortunately im ridiculously honest and said i was using a Netgear router - he said try using their Livebox. I said its not router related, the BT speedtest says my line profile is set to 2000kbps - he went the router route and told me where to go.

Is there ANY point in swapping the routers over, or shall i just phone again and say im using their stinking Livebox this time!?

As you've found, the BT speedtester is flaky.

Just say you're using the Livebox. Not like using that would change the IP profile.

There'll be no point changing to the livebox, just call back and say you've tried the livebox too (if you have one that is, they may get suspicious if you say you have but our systems say you've never had a livebox) and you get the same results. If you like send me your wanadoo username and I'll have a look at what the MSR is for you tomorrow in work.

Do you have an email address i can use to send you my username rather than publishing it here? I'd appreciate any help, i'm useless when it comes to Orange CS and persuading them to do what i want them too...

Any luck yet, Chukki? :p

None I'm afriad, theres no MSR set on your line yet, and it keeps telling me your still within the 10 day training period so won't allow me to log a slow speed fault with BT :(

Will keep ya updated.

I'll be honest i didn't expect much - so hugely appreciate you remembering :)

Just so you know, our router started syncing at 8128kbps on the 22nd of December, so thats 9 non-working (and 4 working) days so far.

Seriously, im really chuffed you got back to me - any more help you can give after the 10 day wait will be appreciated, if you guys send out customer surveys send one my way for a ridiculous amount of lovely flattering comments :p

Let me know how things go!
