ADSL "Max" question

turn ya router off for half an hour and turn back on, that should do it! make sure u leave it off for some time though as if u disconnect and reconnect that will look like your line dropped sync to the exchange and that will lower your connection speed!

Thanks for your suggestion, but from looking at my IP profile on the BT site it kinda looks like its now been set at 2000kbps...so not sure there is anything i can do my end. :(

Any update yet, Chukki?

I'm assuming what has happened is that i've been upgraded to ADSL Max but capped to 2MB as i threatened to leave not so long ago and got offered 8MB "Wireless and talk ...max" thing for £17.99 which is usually 2MB rather than 8MB. That's the only reason i can think of that i have been set to 2MB.

Let me know... :)

It's a BTw thing, not Orange, and it's extremely unlikely to have anything to do with you threatening to leave.
For some reason, the profile just doesn't get updated - whether it's the report that your sync rate's increased, or the process of upping the profile, who knows.

But i need to report it through Orange for anything to happen, right?

Router is still synching at 8128kbps and BT Speedtester still showing IP profile as 2000kbps so nothing has happened since i last checked.

Not sure if this would work or not, but if you somehow got the router to sync at a lower speed than 8Mbps perhaps it would prompt the BT systems to set a profile, then you could allow it back to 8Mbps which should update the profile in ~3days?

I can't find anywhere where i would be able to set the sync speed on my router. Have tried turning it off for a while and back on a few times but with no luck. I was hoping Chukki would be able to push things with BT for me but never mind, i'll try their CS line again :(

Try changing your username to bt_test@startup_domain, leave it on that for a while, then change back to normal. Apparently it can reset it (though your mileage may vary).

Thanks, i'll give it a try. Currently waiting in Orange's CS queue... :p

Well after waiting for over half an hour in the queue i gave up, will call them again later. I tried your suggestion tolien, entered username and blank password, connected successfully, left that for 20 mins, turned router off and back on (still with bt_test username) left it for another 15 odd minutes and reconnected with usual user account/password but no luck, speedtest still shows a shy under 2000kbps.

Is there anything else i can try before i try calling Orange again? We use a Netgear DG834G.

I'll be back in work on saturday so I'll see what else I can find out for you, sorry I ain't replied earlier about this.... also not been in work this week so ain't been able to help out further. We may have to play the waiting game if our faults system tells me your still in the 10 day stabilisation period. Although it does tell me that interleaving is switched off on your line, if that gets turned on it may improve things.

Will report back later.

PS The reason it is taking so long to get through to orange at the moment is we delivered out 30,000 new liveboxes to customers over the christmas holidays.

I am not completely sure but I could have sworn that the DG834G is not ADSL + 2 capable. I know that my linksys router and modem are capable of these speeds which I changed to when upgrading, my parents have the Dg834G and I am pretty sure we found out it's not compatible with ADSL+

'MaxDSL' is just standard ADSL, nothing fancy like ADSL2+ etc.

Oh I apologise, my mistake :( I do know by now though with my lovely history with BT, if your BB connection is working don't upgrade until you need to because they cause more issue than they fix or make better.

Phew, i thought you'd disappeared :p

I'd hope the 10 day period would have ended now, its been just over two weeks. I have no idea what interleaving is but if it helps then i'd appreciate you turning it on! ;)

Thanks again Chukki...keep me updated on how things go!

Chukki - after looking into what interleaving is, i think it would be best to leave it off. I play a lot of online games and apparently it can increase latency which i really don't want to do!

My signal noise seems to be fairly good and i am fairly close to the exchange - so definately think i have no need for interleaving to be on.

Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure we don't have much say in the matter, if I report the fault to BTw then they'll turn it on as one of their diagnostics... Might actually give them a call and see what they say.
