So far the only, that I know of, ADSL modem/router with a physical button on the box to turn on/off wirless is a DG834G V5.

Any other models that including this handy feature?

I know when you flash a WRT54 series with Tomato firmware you can set the front button to disable wireless. They are cable routers though.

Surely when you do this it makes the line/exchange resynch each time you turn it back on?Resulting in a lower speed?

It'll lower your over all net speed to switch off your router- it takes hours for routers and the exchange to re-negotiate the speed after a restart / power outage, which is one of the reasons why routers always seem to be faster than USB modems.

As for the wireless, any reason you want to do this? So long as you have WPA2 and a 13 character password, you've got nothing to worry about with intruders, since there's no practical hack for WPA2 on a home network.

No it won't (so long as you're not switching the router off dozens of times a day), and no it doesn't. The negotiation takes place while the modem's synching up, and I hope you'd notice if it took hours for the blinking light to turn solid...

Yea well that's what two different BT engineers told me when I had conversations with them about ADSL...

We were discussing the BT iPlate, and I asked him if I should reboot my router in a few days to allow the higher(?) speed to kick in.
He said 'No don't, every time your router syncs again, it'll take another few hours for the router and the exchange to find maximum through-put. It might show a connection speed, but the router and exchange constant chat away to each other to find how much of the sync speed can actually be achieved. Leave them alone and they'll sort themselves out.'

Another one told me the same thing last week.

That's what they said man... Certainly the guy I spoke to more recently, we were talking for about an hour, he seriously knew which way was up, he wasn't down talking to me because I was just a customer...

I didn't say that wasn't what they said?

It's wrong - he evidently didn't know his stuff if he told you that...

Don't see the point of leaving wi-fi on if the laptop isn't in use. And a button on the device is the most intutive method for turning it on/off, for all people involved.

Speedtouch ST585v6, round button on the front, hold in for a few seconds to enable/disable wireless, IIRC also use this button for "pairing mode".
