ADSL Wallplate

After using my considerable powerpoint skills, here is a diagram that I hope makes it easier to see. No colours used though cos that would be asking too much of me!

The cables with the line across them means they aren't connected.

I found the link below very useful when rewiring my House...

Hope this helps

Cheers Rob..

Thanks Rob, I've had a look here before. I'm tempted to disconnect all the wires and just have the BT cable from outside connected to the master socket with an adsl xte-2005 on it. I could then put my router directly into it and hopefully get some more speed.

Yeah that is what I did,and my connection is very stable..

Good Idea to may be do a Test (Router Stats) with just your Router Connected to the adsl xte-2005 ,then add your extension one by one and retest...

If you have a any errors etc it may show up to be one of your extensions...

Cheers

Where does the BT cable come from? Is there a grey box on the outside of your house somewhere that the cable is coming from?

Gut feel is there may not be a true master socket and you may have 2 or more sockets connecting straight upto an outside joint box or something as going from the diagrams there's either more sockets in the house or joints in the loft or multiple sockets are fed off the incomming feed before the NTE.

There is a plastic cover outside over the cable that comes into our living room. I took it off earlier and it covers a black cable coming from the ground and this black cable is connected to the cable coming into the house. This cable then joins into the master socket in the living room. I've been all through the house and loft and the only sockets I can find are the ones in the living room, main bedroom and spare bedroom.

I don't need any extensions in the house if I can get the master socket working. I already have cat 5e going from my bedroom to the living room for my htpc. As soon as I can get the master socket working I'll move my router downstairs and then stick a switch in my spare room to run my PC/NAS/WDTV Live off.

The black cable you mention sounds like your main Cat6 cable, which comes from your street cabinet and it should be more of a harder plastic outer sheath...

If you have your master socket, in the lounge working. I would then start fresh. Use Cat5e and then route it where you want it to go.

Would then let you put everything where you want it.

You could use a form of continuity tester to where/what wires are attached to which.

You're absolutely sure you don't have two phone lines? :p

Green pair to one box, blue pair to the other certainly sounds like separate lines. And it would explain why you don't get sync when plugged into the living room socket.

On the other hand, if the green and blue pairs come from the same pair from the drop cable and he's hard-wired a filter to the green pair... that would explain it too.

Do you use a filter with the phone plugged in in the living room?

As far as I know we only have 1 phone line.

I've ordered some jelly crimps so when these arrive I'm going to disconnect the cables and just have the main bt cable going to the master socket with the 2 & 5 connected to the xte-2005 faceplate. I'll then be able to tell if the socket is working with my router or not. If it doesn't work I can just re-join the cables with the crimps. What I thought would be an easy thing to do is turning into a bit of a mare!

He only lives about 200m away so it will probably be easier for me to pop over and ask him what he's done!

to bloody right it would be :D.

unless he's a right ass i wouldn't even consider touching it until you've had a chat with him.

look forward to finding out how he's set it all up :).

Had a local ex-BT engineer out today to have a look at the socket. He mentioned something about it being back-fed off the master socket (no idea!) so he just rewired it and now the master socket is working. When he re-wired the master socket he only attached the blue/white & white/blue wires to the A/B terminals. No wires are punched into the faceplate so is this correct now? I have my router plugged into it via the ADSL Nation XTE-2005 faceplate. My speed has gone up slightly but I think it takes about 48 hrs before it syncs with the exchange.
