hi folks,
my isp(ukfsn),are offering to swap my connection from "up to 8mb adsl", to "up to 24mb adsl2+" which will be llu.
My present connection isn't llu and I only get download speeds of around 2mb(tried a few things to improve this but it seems 2mb is my limit)
My question is, will I benefit from changing over speed wise or is my line doomed to 2mb regardless?

If it doesn't cost any extra then I don't see a problem with switching. Even if you don't get increased speed, you may get a more reliable service.

It's actually £1.50 pm more but I don't mind paying this If I get some significant improvements
just checked prices and its not more, its actually £1.00 cheaper and its unlimited usage although this probably won't make much difference, as never come close to my 30gb pm limit

You might get a gain but it's probably not going to be significant if 2Mbps is the best your line can do. You really need to post the ADSL statistics (your modem should give them) to be sure, though.

my stats are as follows as at 6.25pm:
data rate:2208kb down. 448kb up
noise:15. 20.
att db:48. 31.
yesterday though, my att db was 9. 15. Is this normal that it can vary so much?
Am I right in thinking the attenuation needs to be as low as possible to improve line speeds and if so am I able to reduce this?
I am about 3 mile from the exchange by the way.

If your attenuation is swinging between 48 and 9 dB, there's something badly wrong. If you mean your SNR margin, it's fairly normal for it to change a few decibels over a day.

A lower attenuation implies a shorter line which will typically mean higher speeds - they're not directly related though, per se. The corollary to that is that the only half-feasable way (changing the gauge or material of your line would change your attenuation too, but Openreach are not going to do that) to reduce your attenuation is to move closer to the exchange.

my bad, its noise margin that is fluctuating.
with my stats as above could I expect much more from a llu conection?
also I'm going to be on a 50:1 contention with llu (not sure if its the same on my present connection).
If I was to swap to llu is there any chance the speeds/connection could be any worse than they are at present? If not I may as well give it a whirl as it's a pound cheaper!
as for moving closer to the exchange, It would probably cost me about an extra £30 k to buy a new house making for pretty expensive broadband! lol
thanks for the input so far guys

Not much more, but you'd get some. You'd get more out of ADSL if you went back to the default target SNR margin but if it's fluctuating about 6dB over a day you'd probably see more disconnections too (which is probably why it was increased in the first place).

That's fairly unlikely. It would mean that at peak times you'd be getting a connection slower than dialup.

It shouldn't be any worse, but it might not be any better either. The contention ratio (not that anyone actually pays any attention to them any more) won't affect the speed your modem connects at.

thanks tolien, I suppose I'll give it a whirl then.Seems I shouldn't be any worse off and I'll have a whole shiny pound in my pocket every month!
thanks again guys.
I'll report back when swapped over and let you know how it goes.

my new connection was switched on today (llu), and whooooo its a whole 1mb faster on download. 3mb now. I know its not a lot, but being positive its 50% faster than before at 2mb.
Strange thing is, my belkin router has an orange light flashing, telling me I have no internet connection, but here I am!!!

orange light has now stopped flashing on modem and my download speed is at 3.5mb.I guess llu is better after all!

I was suppoesed to be gettin 2mb with virgin media and i got that with the broadband speedtester but only 300kb/s tops, I went to 10mb which i also get with the broadband speedtester and only get around 3mb/s download speeds so for me it made a massive difference. I've found virgin media very good never had a problem with them and I would say their internet service is floorless with this fibre!
