ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router Needed

So guys. Can you advise me on what to get?

Ive currently got a Netgear DG834G V3. Which does support ADSL2+ But looking for something a little newer and better.

Is there anything?
 
Billion BiPAC7800N :)

Quite possibly the nicest ADSL router I've ever owned. And it has both ADSL and ethernet WAN so will continue to serve you if you move to cable or some other service :)

Second only to the thomson speedtouch 510v4, though that's more sentimental value because it dragged me out of the hell that was freeserve dialup :) And served me well all the way from 512k to 8mbit
 
Yeah, the Billion.

I had a connection so flaky I had the broadband moved onto my second line. Still was the same. Different supplier... same.

Once I learned how to tweak the snr using the Billion at this end I've not looked back. That and an ADSL faceplate. Are all broadband companies ****?

For consumers, yes. If you look at what businesses and enterprise pay for ISP services, you'll realise how little a lowly home use means to them.

It's a business, not a home line and business broadband, not home broadband accounts.

Even more of a PITA as usually they're at least 12 month contracts.
 
I just got the Billion a couple of weeks ago and my connection its the best its ever been. It has a SNR tweak so you can squeese a higher connection within reason.

I loved my 510v4 best pings eva!

Performance is superb, as is wireless, & it will get the best out of your connection.

Best router I've owned, bought it for ADSL2+ originally, now using it on Infinity, so it's future proof.

Plus there is plenty of options to tweak, especially the SNR, & has Bledd as already mention the only thing it lacks is Tomato support.

I have the 7800N and a Linksys WRT320N, the WRT320N retailed around £90 when I bought it and it doesn't do ADSL. The billion cost a fraction more and does both very well. As well as PPTP VPN server and other things the WRT320N doesn't do. I paid £20 more for the Billion. Worth it imo.


Like anything that you use regularly, you get back what you put in. You drive a lot, it's worth investing in a decent car that is reliable and comfortable. You cook a lot, you buy decent knives and pans. Internet access imo is no different to anything else, if you use it every single day and it's important to you it's worth investing in something reliable that will last

There are also good deals out there, so what might look expensive could be more affordable than you think.
 
Yeah I guess so.

I just borked my DG834GV3 Up too, trying Custom FW.Thankfully i have a DG834PN as backup!

I get switched over to ADSL2+ Next week. Im currently on ADSL 8MB. Syn at 8128 448.

Have a decent line, apparently, but got told ill only see 11ish on ADSL2.

Possible i could get more?

M line stats

Connection Speed 8128 kbps..448 kbps
Line Attenuation....29.5 db ....13.9 db
Noise Margin ........17.6 db ....12.7 db
 
According to my ISP (Karoo)

The most i could possibly see is 14.5

I honestly think i could see better then that, if the tweaks were right. 16 maybe!?

It's good living less than 2km from the Exchange ;)
 
You have a decent line, you'll get a good speed. Exactly what it's hard to say as sync speed isn't everything. Usually ISPs will quote on the conservative side to avoid earache if people don't get the speeds they said they would. You just gotta wait and see.
 
I have to be the nay sayer on the Billion, it's a nice router but it's QOS handling is poor so if you need qos ie combine streaming and gaming there are better options.

I have a netgear 3700 v2 loaded with gargoyle, funnily enough plugged into a netgear 834 (set up as modem only). Whole family can be streaming and I still get stable pings which wasn't occurring when I had the billion.

I sold my billion but I noticed one gargoyle user had set his billion up to be the gateway to a with gargoyle to handle the routing :)
 
I do rate Netgears, but i want something where i can tweak the SNR myself. I know some custom FW's do but the last custom FW basically bricked my Router!

Are there any others that allow SNR tweaking out of the box? (Not with DMT)
 
If you are going down this route go the Gargoyle route, get the Netgear WNDR3700v2 - then upload with the Gargoyle firmware. Use your existing 834 as the modem element. (as the wndr does now have a modem inbuilt). Not sure re tweaking the snr though as that would be at the modem end!

This post shows how to convert the 834 as a modem which then means you have a router backup should the 3700 ever fail

Gargoyle has a lot of nice features for the home network as well as QOS that works on an adsl line. I did a bigger post on here a while ago if you search the forums. Really depends if you game/voip and have people streaming in which case having QOS working on the line is a huge bonus

With the 3700 you can use Netgears own firmware update to update the firmware.
