hi guys

does anyone here suffer from ADHD/ADD? just after years of never being able to focus on important things, procrastination, anxiety, mood swings and all sorts of other things i've had enough and booked an appointment to see my GP this afternoon

i've dont a fair bit of research into ADD and all the online tests (i know these are not proper diagnoses but still helpful) have all given like 80% and recommended me to get help, do you think i should print these out when i see my doc?

i've tried caffeine it just gives me the jitters, a friend even gave me one of his staretta (he has ADD) and it worked for about an hour then i fell alseep

i've got so many deadlines but i cant focus on one thing for more than 10 seconds, its really depressing :( i've always had the symptoms just they were never noticed before

so if anyone is/has been in the same boat are the doctors helpful? or will they just think i'm lazy

hope this isnt a medical thread because i am seeing the quack later :p

i've tried everything, no matter what i do i just get distracted, and theres a lot more to it than that, but some of it fairly embarrasing :p

Haha I did.

I have one friend who is convinced he has it [I don't believe him] and one I KNOW who does.

I think a lot of people who say that have ADD don't have it.

well hopefully i'll find out by the end of the day :D

i stayed with a family in america a few years ago, and the dad had adult ADD
it was my first experience of adult ADD, he used to be away for days at a time, they were starting up an IT business and if he got a project started, he couldn't leave it till he was done
his wife had to go to the office to make sure he was eating and drinking
then he'd crash and sleep for days
other times, he couldn't get motivated and used to golf instead of going into the office
occasionally he used to knock on my door, and see if i wanted to go out to the diy store, or supermarket at ridiculous times in the morning
one night i looked out of the window to see him seeding the lawn at 4am
he'd sometimes sit down to eat, and leave a few fork-fulls in because he'd thought of something else that needed doing
this was a while ago but from what i remember, he was a lovely chap, though my outstanding memory of him was driving around at about 2 in the morning listening to afroman on the way to 'some errand' that HAD to be run (i didn't mind because i wasn't sleeping much at the time, away from home and all that)

anyway, i hope the doctor is able to give you some clarification :)

I've got it, I just have to focus on things that interest me, most people I know just ignore it now, generally not a problem at work as I find my job really interests me, though it makes it quite hard todo anything I'm not really interested in.

My GP diagnosed me with it just beofre I went to Uni.

EDIT - Oh it makes me obbsess over things, no lunches, stay late get there early etc, but only for a few things.

I don't belive that it even exists in children so adults certainly can't suffer from a non existant condition. ADHA/ADD are made up terms for stupid, lazy and distruptive children.

You need so help breaking the cycle of procrastination, one way of doing this is to take a task that you need to do and work on it for 1 minute only and then put it down and move onto something else. Another cause of procrastination is avoidance of something that you really have no desire to do. Evaluate all of what needs doing to see if you really want or need to do it, if not dump it or delegate it.

im 18 and Have ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome So Life is a Ball
Might Be a Challenge But every day is something new

my girlfriend often does things twice. i.e.. brushes the paper a few times after writing something down, or touching things twice and fidgeting a hell of a lot when watching telly or talking to someone :/ i dunno if that counts.

I am not going to recommend dexedrine, which NASA gives to their astronauts, because that would make this a medical topic and get locked.

Here's an example, a long, long time ago people where walking around the earth bare-foot. Then they made shoes! Shoes help you travel faster, and easier, in places with rough terrain, than you would without them.

Drugs can do the same, why push yourself to study for hours, when you can have the same result in half the time? Just "getting your head down" doesn't work with everyone. I can keep studying a book but I will have to re-read a lot of the parts to make sense, understand and memorize what the author is on about.

Or, I can take a pill every time I want to have a comprehensive study period and learn a lot more, in much shorter time, and remember the next day, too!

you're exactly the same as me :D

just 1 year younger :p

AJUK - nonsense :) attention and focus are controlled by dopamine and norphenepherine (SP?) and people with ADD dont have much of it

Is random and pointless capitalisation a side effect of either of those? :p

If the doctor refers you to a specialist and they determine that you do have one of these disorders then they can prescribe an awfully expensive drug that has been developed by the same companies that sponser research into such conditions. :)

Best of luck with the doctor but I will refuse to accept that you are actually ill until the day I die. :)

Sounds like every other bout of anxiety to me. Not sure getting yourself a course of ritalin is the answer you need

I think that most of the media attention it's getting nowadays is because people don't want to admit that they're bad parents, so they get doctors to say that their child has a "condition".

No. You're bad parents. Your child is annoying. Make it behave properly, with discipline, not drugs.
