Currently using a single core 3700 at 2.8GHz at stock volts (although it will do 3.1 at stock). Is it worth getting a cheapy 3800 x2? How high will it overclock? (using a DFI 3200 cf-dr with large copper zalman cooler). Mainly use my PC for gaming. Thanks in advance for any responses.

id say go for it :D

get the cheap x2 3800+ and you will feel some difference!

i had a 3700+ san diego (sp) and the x2 is so much better!

Makes such a difference being able to put stuff on dvd without rendering the computer totally unusable!

Things just seem quicker!

I had no luck overclocking my 3700+, but my 3800+ i have running nice at 2.81 from the stock of 2.0 :)

Craig!! :D

Thanks for the post craig, I'll probably take your advice. Was it stable at 2.8? What FSB multiplier were you using and what mem divider if any?

It won't overclock quite as high, but it is dual core so will feel quicker generally (in Windows etc). I'm not sure how much it will effect games as most don't use the second core, so you would need to overclock it to as close to what you have now to keep the single core performance close.

baring in mind the cache is 512k though, as with the SD it is 1mb. i dont know how the x2 chips work though, if it actually uses 512x2.

to be honest i dont know how much difference cache may make though anyway

Id defo recommend it, the price alone is fantastic never mind the chip! (i bought mines for 55 a few months back and i am still more than happy with that!)

It is rock solid at 2.8... but results vary! There are lots of other posts and a table even containing peoples results with the 3800+'s. Actually mines runs at 2.9 also, but i didnt like pushing it that much! lol

I pushed the volts up a bit for stability, just one notch to 1.4v. Multiplyer is at x10. FSB at 281. Ram is running 234.1 (cpu/12). HT is at x4 instead of x5! :)

Hope this helps!

I think it does help, but im reading more and more about it not being as crippling as people think!

Read a cracking review of the c2d line, covering the 1meg, 2meg and 4meg cache processors... lots of the time the difference was minimal! :D Some of the results showed good use of the cache, but i can remember what that was (got a feeling it was video encoding) but for the price difference they were saying its not too woroth it depending on what your doing! :)

The 939 version is most definately 2GHz @ stock and as said previously, cache makes bugger all difference generally.

You've got a single core 3800+ 2.4GHz cpu. Theres 939 and AM2 versions. We're talking about X2 (dual core) 3800+ here.

Got my recently purchased X2 3800+ @ 2.8Ghz.

Runs sweet. At todays prices its a no brainer for upgrading a single core 939 system.

Buy it. Buy it now!
