Adventures of an Over Powered Mage

Purpose of this thread was to show the improvement the mods make over the default graphics, not to compare it to modern games! How could you possibly compare this 6 year old engine to modern games?!

3 year old, the engine was revamped in 2007 when TBC came out, however the new features are only used in outland/northrend. Check out grizzly hills or Crystalsong, their beautiful

For such an experienced WOWer you have shocking lack of knowledge of what extra is on that screenshot above :p

Also look at the vegetation, vegetation visibility, cloud lod, vision depth.....in fact install the damn mods and see for yourself :p

Just looks the same from what I remember, WoW could be extremely bloomy at times without mods though but it was fairly rare.

it's one of the things i liked about WOW as well..... otherwise you spend ages fiddling around with settings and still can't get it quite right. (main problem with me and Guildwars)

funny how MMOs like EVE manage to update their engine (without charging for it) whereas WOW is just milked for all it's worth without updates?

Eve has a subscriber base (and correct me if I'm way out) around 500,000? WoW is still on the good side of 10 million. It's not difficult to see why Blizzard don't see the sense in spending money on an engine overhaul that would do nothing but force paying customers off their books due to high system requirements.

Eve doesn't require high PC systems...

high system requirements? hardly.
anyway, it could have 2 systems running side by side (eve did this) so that there are both options available .

WoW still has by far and away the greatness art direction of any game.
It's good, yes. I wouldn't go as far as you have, however ;)

It's pretty sad to see the like-for-like "ololol it looks pap" comments. Games don't actually HAVE to strive to look as photo-realistic as possible. You certainly wouldn't go into an art gallery and "olololol it looks pap" at Van Gogh's work because it doesn't look enough like the sunflowers on your dining table.
We're just old. If your first gaming system was an XBox or PS2, graphics *are* everything.

Seriously, hang out with some kids (<18 years old). Talk to them about *any* game. The first thing they'll say is either "graphics were great!" or "graphics sucked". That's it. That's your modern gamer's view of the world.

Hl2 is 6 years old.

And it still looks good.

I'm not trolling, but i honestly cant see why those screens are better than WoW normally. With bloom enabled, it looks the same. The textures are the same, the shadows are the same.

Theres more ground foliage, I seem to remember that there was a line in an ini file which you could alter that basically multiplied the existing ground foliage to give greater coverage. I'm guessing that the mod changes the ini file for you.

Bloom though...well I'm not a big fan of bloom anyway, most of the time in games I actually turn it off (or at the very least down). Over the top bloom seems to be used in a number of games as a graphical "enhancement" , but it usually just serves to either a) give me a headache , b) wash out any sky detail that might be present or c) blind me on snowy/sandy areas so that I cant see what the hell I am doing. (or all of the above)

The ground foliage can be increased with a simple GFX macro you can run ingame... and has been known since early 2008.
