If you have a really popular website, how exactly can you get paid for hosting adverts in the form of banners/pop-ups?

Do you only get paid for the clicks received by the advert, or just for having the advert there in the first place, and what sort of revenue do they generate?

I'd really appreciate some advice here as I'm looking into a web project. I'll be giving up a lot of time for the benefit of others so it would be nice to get something back!

The most popular is google adsense, which is pay per click. All the info is here:

Revenue is probably about 1p a click or something like that (only a guess). There are other similar systems which are all pay per click.

To get people to pay to just have their adverts on your page it would have to be extremely popular and you would probably have to make a deal directly with a company wanting to advertise on your site.

Only 1p a click if they arn't competitive ads.
Sometimes can often be upto $1.50-$2.00 a click. Tho yeh true sometimes i can literally be 1 cent - normally for entertainment / teen sites i find :/
Which is a bit crap cos i get lots of traffic on those sites, but crap ppc.
