Adverts: getting more stupid every year

They will? Seriously?

How many people actually buy an OS, ever, and how many have Windows because it came with their PC?

Are more people buying Macs all of a sudden? Last time I checked Macs were mostly the domain of graphic designers et al.

A quick look around the library revealed 5 macs and 2 laptops.

I quite like the adverts to (much prefer MS's compared to the joke that is Apple).

One thing I have noticed on these forums is that a few people I saw getting Mac's have put them for sale. Not sure why and some have been a few weeks after they've had them. May say something really.

MS don't do much wrong (I'm not on about there business practices or aquisitions). They provide a stable o/s and update it regularly. Whether you like the company itself or not the product is very good.
Maybe those people have seen the light and have upgraded to a better spec'ed version..?

As for MS not doing much wrong, I beg to differ. Their OS is not as stable as it should be considering the resources they have available to them. They update it frequently with hotfixes and service packs because the vulnerabilities get reported. They have improved recently, but until not so long ago they weren't particularly responsive at fixing bugs.

Compared to other OSes such as Solaris, Linux, OS X, OS/400, etc... I think Windows is fairly poor in comparison. Similarly, I think Oracle is a better RDBMS than SQL Server, Apache is better than IIS, Firefox, Opera & Chrome are all better than IE, iTunes is better than WMP, Thunderbird is better than Outlook, etc...

What about Mac pricing, are they still charging 4x the equivalent cost of an equal-spec PC?

That's a pretty good reason to own a PC right there :p
if we're only looking at it from a financial angle, Linux beats Windows in that respect. Linux is £100 cheaper than Vista - that's a pretty good reason to use it right there. :p

Don't know who it's for, but it has 'The Bellamy Brothers' playing and features some guy on a big water-slide that loops around skyscrapers, goes through buildings and along the streets. Even though it ain't real, I seriously want a go in that big water-slide.

I like them! It's quite cool and funny and displays the message clearly without actually displaying the message (if that makes sense). I like the "I'm a PC... and I sell fish" in a Borat-esque accent.

Just wanted to rant ;) I've seen the new MS advert a total of 3 times, and it's already made me want to strangle something.

"I'm a PC"
"I'm a PC!"
"Ich bin PC!"

WTF!!

I'm quite glad they did it, it just owns all those stupid "i'm a mac", "i'm a pc" youtube videos.

I like how the advert shows some African people in a village that doesn't even look like it has electricity, saying "I'm a PC".

The new Mr Muscle ads are a bit rubbish, they've got rid of the weedy guy and replaced him with an animated muscly superhero in a tight suit and a lab coat. It's rubbish.

PK!

That ad is awful! Basically it was made for Argentina and performed pretty well out there. SC Johnson have a policy that if an ad does well in its local market the will dub it and roll it out worldwide, hence the reason most of SCJ's ads are awful and dubbed.

Yeah nothing. Microsoft own 95% of the market so it's not exactly like this has generated any sales. Unless the op is living in the 19th century and thought, "wow look at this company called microsoft with their awesome os called windows vista, I've never heard of them before, I must go and buy this os", seems unlikely however.
The aim of advertising is not always to increase sales or market share.

Microsoft have combatted Apple's campaign and basically tried to prove it's worth nothing, and are maybe hoping to evolve the brand, or maybe the amount of American college students who move to a mac is on the up - maybe Microsoft are tactically saying to them, they're being duped by this persona.

I think The 'Bring on the trumpets' ads are class, and so is the new Barclays campaign.

The world of computing is moving away from the desktop.

Microsofts domination has always been the desktop operating system.

Unless something drastic happens, they will die a slow, cash-haemorrhaging death.
