Adverts: getting more stupid every year

A British version aired briefly, it had the two guys out of peep show in it. Obviously the British public didn't fall for such shameful advertising tactics so the advert campaign didn't last long. It's been going in the US for years.

I think the main problem with the British one was that they used Mitchell and Webb as pretty much their characters from Peep Show. Robert Webb playing the Mac and in Peep Show his character is an absolute ****.

I love the end of this advert. "Life without walls". Isn't the saying "In a world without walls. Who needs windows and gates?".

Quite franky, I'm utterly fed up of "Here come the girls". Will it ever go away?!

Its an absolutely rubbish advert. Im a PC. What does that mean. Does it mean that you use a pc? Last time I checked microsoft still has a fricking huge slice of the market and most people use a PC. So its saying that all these cool hip people use a PC? Right so even though 95% of my mates use a PC I think that only aging businessmen use them.

Can someone explain how this is good advertising. To me this is akin to saying look at all these people who drive a car with 4 wheels. You should do that too. Pretty much everyone uses a PC already so why try and persuade people that PCs are used by loads of hip people. I only hope that it cost them a ridiculous amount of money.

Its about challenging peoples perceptions. If you did a poll of people on the street I'm sure that if you asked them which is 'cooler' Mac or PC the result would lean heavily towards Mac's, with this campaign Microsoft are hoping to take some of the 'cool' market share away from Apple.

Microsoft dominate the business market, but if they don't act they will lose a huge chunk of the home market.

i see its done its job...

Yeah nothing. Microsoft own 95% of the market so it's not exactly like this has generated any sales. Unless the op is living in the 19th century and thought, "wow look at this company called microsoft with their awesome os called windows vista, I've never heard of them before, I must go and buy this os", seems unlikely however.

They will? Seriously?

How many people actually buy an OS, ever, and how many have Windows because it came with their PC?

Are more people buying Macs all of a sudden? Last time I checked Macs were mostly the domain of graphic designers et al.

Unless apple decide to sell the os on its own and it is compatible with all current hardware they will find that they will never take much of a bite out of microsofts market share. I have always thought that Mac OS was cooler and nicer looking than windows but I never really thought about getting one. I have a secondhand macbook that I got cheaply and I think its pretty good but I still like windows. The microsoft advertising is all trying to beat apple at their own game but apple have the complete package style wise and they also have the ipod and iphone which everyone either has or has heard of. Microsoft will always lose a style battle. Microsoft is not cool or trendy and as soon as they realise that the better their advertising will get.

Windows has the problem that it has lots of bad publicity for vista which is mainly due to lack of driver support from third parties. The problem is that mac has to program for one piece of hardware so everything can be perfectly optimised for that. Windows relies on the hardware manufacturers a lot and has to create software that works on billions of hardware configurations. How they can sort this I dont know; what I do know is that showing a bunch of people who use a PC on an advert is one of the most laughable concepts ever for a company that has so many people using their OS. For christs sake, they could have got a hundred people to put in the advert that have 1 leg, 1 arm and are called timothy and use a PC. Ridiculous.

I would bet that the majority of people under 25 would prefer a Mac to a PC. If Microsoft doesn't convert these people a whole generation of people buying computers would rather opt for a Mac.

*edit* also, don't think about it trying to sell an OS think about it as trying to sell a lifestyle choice

A lot of people are getting Mac's purely because of Ipods now actually...many didn't even know Mac's existed untill they got they're Ipod.

This is true. I know as im at college :D PCs are far superior for now though.

What about Mac pricing, are they still charging 4x the equivalent cost of an equal-spec PC?

That's a pretty good reason to own a PC right there :p

The majority of people don't care about specs, they are just numbers they don't understand. All they care about is that it can get on Facebook and Myspace and play some music.

It's fashion.

I quite like the adverts to (much prefer MS's compared to the joke that is Apple).

One thing I have noticed on these forums is that a few people I saw getting Mac's have put them for sale. Not sure why and some have been a few weeks after they've had them. May say something really.

MS don't do much wrong (I'm not on about there business practices or aquisitions). They provide a stable o/s and update it regularly. Whether you like the company itself or not the product is very good.

No, they're not, but I can't be bothered to link to the slashdot posts that debunk this. I think it's more like 1.5x the price, so yes - it's more expensive - but not that extreme.

Conversley though the iphone was the cheapest phone of it's type by far after jailbreaking it. And the p&g version is pretty cheap as well, it's brought the price of all pda style phones down a lot.
