Adverts in gaming

I am not against ads in game if they subsidise and reduce the price of games user end.
I am against 2142 because the adverts do Not subsidise the price in fact we pay more than the Yanks for the game. These two reasons have held me off from buying 2142.
As a massive BF2 fan/addict odviously i would have liked to get 2142 on day of release but i have held off for the above reasons.
Also i am not sure about the effect they will have on game performance.
I play untold amounts online and know that games and systems are pushed to the limits these days and it doen't take much to effect the feel of online gaming.
Adverts and data capture will have an effect on performance somewhere along the line and as a hardcore gamer i am not up for that at all.
I have abslutely nothing to hide at all, i just value my low pings and Excellent system performance more than anything else.

I don't know which game you're talking about, but if you're blaming those of us who bought Battlefield 2 for £27.99-£29.99 on launch then you're a fool. It was only the most highly anticipated multiplayer shooter of the year, and not many people wanted to wait months (it did take a long time too) for it to drop in price. :o

Fact is I don't think people are happy about paying the same ~£30 for practically the same game now that it has ads in it. Like malc30 said, some of that profit has to come back to the customer if we're not going to have an option to disable it or it will just put people (like me) off buying it at all.

This whole recent agrument of sticking ads in games amuses me somewhat. They don't really take anything away from the gaming experience in my opinion. Take movies for example, there is product placement all over the shop in movies these days does it make the film worse, no not really.

Where the line should be drawn is the fact that details can be taken from us when we play online, i'm not sure how all that works but I don't like the sound of it :( .

If you look at the amount of effort that goes into making games these days you are talking many man hours to get the job done, and it isn't cheap. Any way to help get the games to market and to help keep those employed that bring us these games then I think using advertising is a viable route to take.

Would have thought Fifa/Pro Evo games have had adverts in them for ages by now, same with most racing games ie tyre manufacturers - strange never heard anyone complaining then!!!

Ironically, people generally yearn for more adverts in Fifa/Pro Evo, without them the kits just don't look right!

It's more a question of out of context adverts. If you've ever logged onto the US planetside servers and spent an hour fighting with hovertanks and laser guns on a planet far far away while surrounded by ads for Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo, you'd see what I mean :p

Sports games with ads are just an accurate recreation of the real thing. The only way I can see ads fitting into futuristic games is if the advertisers have the sense to spoof things up a bit - "Microsoft - 300 years at the top!" type of thing.
