My daughter bought an iPhone off her mate some time ago and had it unlocked to her Vodafone sim and all has been good for over a year.
This morning she decides to update the phone and now has an error message saying that Sim can't be activated etc.
I rang up the place who unlocked it and they said that there's nothing they can do at the moment until a new hack comes out.

What are her alternatives to get this phone working?
Can she buy a Tesco iPhone sim and will that work?

Any advice please.

As far as I understand the update removes the unlock, so just need a sim from whatever the original carrier It was locked to.

Indeed, If the iPhone is updated it removed the jailbreak (which I believe your unlock would have been on)

If it was an official unlock then just put it in itunes should recognize it and it will unlock, if not you need an original carrier sim then wait for a jailbreak on whatever firmware it is and a baseband unlock.

OK thanks for the advice.
I'll wait until the jailbreak comes out and take it up our local phone shop who will do it for £10.
In the meantime I'm going to Hanley to buy a San Fransisco for her.

The jailbreak is out for 4.3.1, has been for a while now. Easy to do yourself, but Ultrasnow< that unlocks is kind of brokenish at the min but still works of sorts.Or get tiny umbrella and see if you have the blobs saved somewhere for an older firmware and roll back but theres a chance its probably updated the Baseband to the latest which makes things complicated.

Why not spend 0-15 and get official unlock which you won't have this problem in the future, or do you want it jail broken as well.

Apparently £20 on orange

To unlock your phone all you will need to do is call our Customer Service team on 150 from your Orange phone, or 07973 100150 from any other mobile or landline or 450 (07973 100450) if the phone has been used with a pay as you go SIM. Unlocking generally takes between 7 and 10 days.

If it is locked to O2 which is likely it is really easy:

Find a simcard on ebay with £20 credit, this will cost about £14.
Make a few calls on the simcard and wait a day or two. (you have to do this to associate the O2 number with your iPhone)
Go on O2 support website and wait for the chat window to pop-up (only working days).
Ask the operator to unlock, £15 less credit and 10 minutes later your phone is unlocked.

You can test if it is locked to O2 with O2 or Tesco simcards, it will activate in iTunes with either of these.

only your carrier can properly unlock the phone without the use of a jailbreak.

If vodafone won't do it till the contract is up then your only hope is to jailbreak it and wait for an unlock to be introduced for the current version.

Unlocked to O2 or Orange as well?

When you say get an O2 sim I presume it has to be a dedicated iPhone one?

no any sim will do.

All itunes does is check the carrier.

You don't actually need to start using data etc.. As thats all the iphone sims do that normal ones don't, give you good rates on internet usage etc.

If the phone is locked to O2 (most are, especially if it isn't working on Orange, test it with a friends O2 sim before buying one to unlock) the operator will unlock it so you can use it on any network, this will cost £15 from the O2 simcard's credit you purchase from ebay and put in the phone. But make sure you have over £15 credit on it as you need to make some calls on the iphone to link them, any O2 simcard will do.

I got an official unlock from 3 as I'm with O2 for £15 and it usually can take between 24-48 hours. If your daughter is planning to use the phone mate, I would personally spend the 20 or so quid and get the unlock.

Its definitely worth it :)
