was the phone originally locked to orange ?
No, O2.
It was then unlocked at our dodgy phone shop so she could use her Orange sim.
So what is the easiest solution?

Secondly, £20 payment for a one off or £20 each and every time Apple update? This shop would be mad to offer official jailbreaks.
I trust my OCUK imaginary friends more than a bloke in an O2 shop and they said you need £20 on itHaha great story
glad it worked out well
All you need to do now is speak to O2 about getting them to unlock it so she can use her original sim. Have you done this bit yet ?
What has wound me up is the O2 salesman saying it won't work and she needs to buy a new iPhone - then again what did I expect.

or that putting in an O2 SIM wouldnt bring it back to life.
I unlocked my iphone a while back officially with o2 around 6 months back. I only put £15 on, I just had a few friends ring me for 2 minutes on 2 seperate days. I didn't make any out going calls at all and it got unlocked with no problems
