Advice - bricked iPhone

Sounds like you are trying to get it to work on Orange, as far as I am aware you have to ask the original provider which it is locked to. Orange cannot unlock other providers iPhones. Its very likely this is O2.

Easiest solution is definitely to buy an O2 simcard and get it officially unlocked, once the simcard is associated with the iPhone it takes minutes on the webchat,

Right needs to be unlocked through O2 then. See the link earlier in the thread. Once a official unlock has happened it is registered with apple and future updates won't get this problem.

No, O2.
It was then unlocked at our dodgy phone shop so she could use her Orange sim.

So what is the easiest solution?

Only the company who originally locked it can unlock it :)

get an o2 sim with some credit on it, insert sim and activate the phone.

Make a few cheap phone calls to link the two together. Then ring O2 and ask them to unlock it. They'll charge you £15 which will come out of the credit thats already on the phone.

Job done and its properly unlocked and will never happen again. Did this with Iphone 3g before i sold it :)

Last question because my old brain is getting confused on Google.

Can somebody link me to the O2 sim card I need to do this please?
We have a Tesco and Carphone Warehouse 1 mile up the road from us and she won't mind paying a little extra to get it sorted.
We also have an Orange shop and a dodgy phone shop within distance so he's probably got something on the shelf.
I am surprised that since he spends all day jailbreaking phones and other such stuff that he didn't know that selling a simple sim card would do the trick.

Secondly, £20 payment for a one off or £20 each and every time Apple update? This shop would be mad to offer official jailbreaks.

We have lots of dodgy places in Stoke however, according to the OCUK Apple forum, jailbreaking can be discussed now so something has happened.

Anyway the original contract was with her boyfriend who had it well over 2 years ago.
I mentioned in another thread that he hit hard times and had to sell his home, car and all his possessions.

that means any contract related to the handset will be finished, so just ask o2 to unlock it. It will then be unlocked forever, regardless of apple updates etc.

do you have friend or family that have o2 contract? if so stick their sim into the iphone and dial out few calls to any one then goto o2 website to process with the free unlocking. works for me everytime.

My daughter has just come back with an O2 sim bought from the O2 shop in Hanley with £15 on it.
Why have you only put £15 on it, I told you £20 because you need to make some phonecalls?
Because the guy said it won't work and it would save me £5
 I trust my OCUK imaginary friends more than a bloke in an O2 shop and they said you need £20 on it
But he said it definitely won't work and I will need to buy a new iPhone
For Gods sake can't you do anything I ask, he sells phones, he's not a geek
Yeah but he was fit

I put the card in and it still gives me the emergency page so I then plug it into iTunes.
'Do you want to update the carrier?'
'Yes please'

Working iPhone and told off daughter.

Thanks lads

Haha great story

glad it worked out well :)

All you need to do now is speak to O2 about getting them to unlock it so she can use her original sim. Have you done this bit yet ?

No because the sim was only put in just before I posted.
Apparently there are free texts on the sim so hopefully that ties it to the network and when she rings up in a couple of days they can take the £15 off.
If not she makes some phone calls and adds another £5.

What has wound me up is the O2 salesman saying it won't work and she needs to buy a new iPhone - then again what did I expect.

I unlocked my iphone a while back officially with o2 around 6 months back. I only put £15 on, I just had a few friends ring me for 2 minutes on 2 seperate days. I didn't make any out going calls at all and it got unlocked with no problems
