Advice for 3440 x 1440 Resolution Gaming

I would like some advice on what options would be sensible on my wallet and future proofing. I have a full custom water loop and will be watercooling. I will be playing at 3440 x 1440.

I used to have a Dell 34 Curved Display but had blacklight bleeding issue so returned it however I will definitely get a ultra wide display however I could barely run games with a AMD R9 280X. My PSU is a EVGA 1300w so it is not an issue (unless its an AMD R9 R295x2 Crossfire XD).

Cheers.

i use a 290 and for the most part it does ok but for me its a stop gap untill the 390/980ti, my guess is a 980 would be pretty good

I'd also echo the 8gb 290x CF sentiment. I'd say wait for the new cards to come out this summer but I doubt they will be an improvement price/perf-wise for the first 2 months or so.

I had a 295x2 that sadly didn't perform well at 3440x1440
(I had a fair few issues with Crossfire and so basically ended up with one 290x)
Then again it depends what games you want to play?

I've only just moved to this resolution myself; My R9 295x2 works extremely well when crossfire is working (BF4, Alien Isolation). Even in single 290X mode, as Drojman says it will depend on the game. Elite Dangerous works just fine at that resolution and looks tremendous.

If you’re not keen on spending the full £900 or crossfire then a single 980 is probably your best bet, you can then add a second one if/when prices drop in a few months with the release of new cards and not have to worry about crossfire profiles.

The other options would be 980 SLI now, a Titan X or wait for whichever of the 980ti or 390x is released first, they should offer a great option for 1440p on a single card without paying the Titan premium.

I hate recommending waiting as you can spend your entire life waiting for PC hardware, but in this case it may just be worth it for you as even if a single 980/290x can handle a fair few games on good settings at that resolution, it wont be long before they can't.

980SLi right now seems a rather expensive solution, considering the 4GB VRAM.

Even if you were to buy one now then SLi down the road, you'll still be limited to 4GB VRAM which may prove a limiting factor with games coming later this year and next year.

If I were spending £500+ on a GPU solution, I'd like to know it's going to last a year or two at my desired resolution and detail settings.

you can do as i did, blow the budget on the monitor and pick up a second hand 290 for about £150 and wait it out, so far its only crysis 3 that i had to knock down a few settungs but still looks great

I would think that a stop gap purchase of a 2nd 280x (for crossfire) would be your best option - assuming that you/they can cope with the heat(and, possibly noise).- money wise.
Or - running a close second - sell the 280x and buy a 290/290x. (one on its own will be able to cope with most games - unless you want all mod cons running) - you could buy a second later (heat and noise would become more of a problem tho).
Or wait till the 390's are out and then re-think things:)

Overall 'head' says wait and go with option 3 - 'heart' says buy newer tech i.e. second option.

Glad it's your headache and not mine :D

Thanks guys for all the replies.

I was thinking of waiting to see what team red brings to the table however from the rumours it looks like it will be priced quite high :(

The GTX 980 4gb memory doesnt really appeal to me as i prefer the card to last at least the most 2 years. Was looking at the Titan X but it is so overpriced. I dont think its a good value.

I was looking at the r9 295x2 however I am not sure if it is easy to remove the AIO cooler as I would like to add it onto my custom loop. Crossfiring 290x was another option I was looking at but was wondering if it would be better to just wait and get the 390x, 980 ti etc. Heat is not an issue as I will be putting it under water. 290x 8gb crossfire is what I am leaning towards but hesitant as the next gen is right around the corner.

Well im using 1 970 with no problems. I don't put anything on ultra, but if you leave everything in high your fine.

BF hardline - 60 - 90 fps
Farcry 4 - 55 - 65
Dying light - 50 - 65fps

My next natural purchase will probably be 980ti
