evening all, well i found out today that i will be getting my nice big bonus at the end of this month. and would like to take my girlfriend away the weekend after valentines day.

we both live in Hampshire/Berkshire. i am thinking of a nice country hotel somewhere upto an hour or so's drive. spend the friday and sat night there. whereas she has suggested paris for the weekend.

any suggestions.

My mate and her boyfriend just came back from Paris. They spent the New Year over there and loved it.

What is your budget? Paris is very expensive although worth it for the occasion.

£3-400ish. i just get the impression that paris is going to be stupidly busy that weekend. never been myself, but she went a few years ago. ( with family, not like that )

Paris is overpriced, far too cliché and generally rather dull in my view. The food is good though. The French know how to cook.

Not from my experience of 2 weeks in the south of France they don't. We stayed in a few decent hotels around Chamonix and also within Avignon, and most of the food was frankly just poor in standard.

Is Venice any good for a long weekend? Heard it's a bit pricey... :(

Agreed, Venice is a good option if you can get EasyJet there and sort your own accomodation out especially if you stop just outside Venice in a place called Lido Di Jesolo. Nice beach resort and Venice is around 30 minutes by Bus then Water Taxi.

Food in Venice is very reasonably priced if you stay away from St Marks square. A lot of really good family restaurants are available for around £15.00 a head. I can personally vouch for Al Gatto Restaurant if you like seafood :)

Paris isn't that expensive if you do it right. It is certainly cheaper than London. The restaurants are excellent, even the smaller ones, the people friendly (especially if you try and speak French), the trains are ok (but smell of yellow water) and only 2 hours away on Eurostar that takes you right into the center! There is loads of stuff to do and your misses will love you forever*.

*That last statement isn't guaranteed.

Paris is a bank breaker and full of dog turds (last time I was there anyway).

Clearly you want to take her to Windsor and stay at the Macdonald Castle Hotel. Loads of good places to eat out. You can go to the Theatre Royal and visit Windsor Castle in the day.

I've done this before and it's not a bad way to spend a weekend, did it for my other half's 19th iirc.

Did something similar in London as well. Saw the Jerry Springer musical.
