And the experts are you.

I need to get myself a new car and dont really know where to start.
I want something for about 2-3k, no more than a 1.4 engine and around 40k miles on the clock and nothing less than 6 years old.

Ive thought about Fiesta, Focus and Clio. What else should i look out for?

Im guessing i should avoid main dealers?
Im also guessing that i wont get much for my 1.4 P reg Rover 200. Maybe i wont even get a trade for it.

Any help will ne welcome.

The Micra and Yaris are both definitely worth a look. with your restriction of no bigger than a 1.4, I would avoid moving to a bigger car (although I would ask why the 1.4 restriction).

With that limited budget and 40k limit i fear you've set yourself up to buy a total nail.

You could get a 1.6 Focus which would be barely anything more than a 1.4 insurance wise, but not under 40K miles..

What is this 40K issue? If it's a decent car and has been looked after going over that isn't going to mean it's falling apart. You're seriously going to limit yourself with that one..

Ignore mileage, if the cars been looked after then it's pretty much irrelevant these days. Spending extra money on a low mileage car of this age is particularly false economy as such a car is likely to have spent it's life doing short local trips, and as such is likely to have suffered more engine wear than a higher mileage car.

All good points. Maybe i should up my game. The limit on the 1.4 engine was die to insurance and tax. Ill take into account every you people say, maybe its time to get myself a slightly more powerful car then :)

What kind of milage should i look for? The only thing i worry about is came belt changes.

Around the 70,000 mark i'd say on a Focus 1.6, depends if you spend 2K or 3K really.

I think you'll be pleasantly suprised about the insurance for it :)

Do some quotes and you might be suprised how close together they all are for a huge variety of engine sizes.

Mileage isn't really that much of a concern. Avoid something that's about to need it's cam belt/major service (unless you can get the dealer to throw it in for you free), but other than that, be concerned about the condition and not the mileage. A higher mileage car may require more consumables replacing, but then a low mileage/high wear car (like one used around town always from cold) will do far more wear and tear than a higher mileage motorway car.

A well looked after car shouldn't be too dependant on mileage.
