i was going to overclock but my friend came round who knows some stuff and there are no overclock options on the bios i assume because its a Dell mobo?
anyway i have ordered:
MSI Cyclone GTX 460 1gb OC edition
thermaltake Evo blue 650wpsu

but read that my cpu will bottleneck the GPU!? lol

so ive been looking at upgrading the mobo, ram and CPU heatsink/fan
i was looking at this mobo Asus P5G41C-M LX G41 Socket 775 VGA Out 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboards but could anyone reccmond this product or a better one? and also what ram and heatsink fan shall i go for.

also is there anything that you guys could reccomend me doing?

Thanks very much in advance :)

If you can you should probably cancel the order for the Thermaltake Evo Blue, it's not completely crap, but I'm sure you can do better for not much more.

Do you have a budget?
It maybe nicer to get a new mobo/cpu/ram bundle and sell you Q6600 to fund a bit of it.
Depending on the model (SL9UM or SLACR) you can get up to £70-£80 for them.

It looks like all you need is a MB upgrade to one that can overclock other than that there is an overclocking guide on the forum here

Also is you Q6600 a G0 stepping one?
Whats the budget for your MB+ram?

When you have access the MM is probably gonna be you best bet unless you realy wanny buy new.

probably have about £200-300 for Mobo and ram, im getting confused as to what i should do lol.

Leave it or upgrade?

how much could i sell the 9600gt, the old mobo and ram for?

and thanks very much for all the help so far

Its up to you you could get this
Keeping your current ram and overclock to prob around 3 or 3.2 Ghz

If you wanna spend £300 You could go for new ram/cpu/MB
I5 650 (prob stretch the budget)
or
Phe2 965 (great value on this week only.

As above when you get access you could sell your Q6600 for around £70

Personaly I would just go for the MB upgrade and play around with the overclock:) Have a look round for a second hand MB you can prob pick one up for around £60 from a popular auction site.

A few pointers for you.

You have 3x1GB stick of memory, this means your memory is not running in dual channel mode.

Is that an OEM or Retail version of Win 7? If it's OEM it means your license is tied to your motherboard.

Providing the Dell case accepts full size boards and you're happy you can transfer your OS license then you could always go down the cheaper route and purchase a half decent P45 board.
Something like an ASUS P5Q Pro would give your Q6600 a new lease of life due to it's great overclocking abilities, and 3.6GHz should easily be in your sights providing the right cooling is used.

However if you wanted to spend your £300 budget on a new board, memory and CPU then something like this would be splendid, providing it will fit in your current case ;)

Ignore the poster who advised the Core i5 650, the 650 is only a dual core with hyperthreading, with the Core i5 760 you get a true quad core CPU that's almost certain of a 4GHz oc :)

Yea, I agree with coupe69. It is depending on how much you wish to spend for the upgrade. I myself upgrading my motherboard to a Asus P5Q Deluxe (which I picked up 2nd hand from members market) which I mentioned to clock to 3.6GHz relatively easy, from a crappy nforce 650i board which only managed 3.0GHz stable on my Q6600 G0. My previous CPU cooler Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro. 7 Rev.1 could coup fine with the extra heat (under 70C in prime), but I saw the Thermalright Silver Arrow in the members market for £35 inc. so I bought that since I somewhat always wanted that cooler :D

Around £300 for a i5 760 build is the best bang for bucks build at the moment (AMD build is hardly cheaper now that they are discontinuing the Phenom II X4 955BE and leaving just the more expensive 965BE/970BE on the shop shelfs), but with that said, Sandybridge is just around the corner, so if you could wait till January, you may be able to pick up some 2nd hand i5 750/i5 760 plus motherboard bundle for cheap off people that are getting the "new toys" :p

HI guys wow thank you so much for all the help again.

The case isnt the original dell case, i have an NZXT. Lexa Blackline

when i said my budget was 2-300 ofcourse that is if i have to. if i can get away with it i would much rather pay 100-150 lol for a mobo and ram and then much about with overclocks.

Thats an awesome idea, would everyone agree with this?

and would this i5 setup be compatible with everything i already have?

Most things would be fine, but you would still need to get the DDR3 RAM, as your current DDR2 rams won't be compatable. Also, I hope your Windows 7 is Retail not OEM, otherwise it might tided to your current motherboard.

ok you guys have given me lots to think about and i really really appreciate all the help so far, you have all been super helpful. So what board would you go for if i were to go for the cheaper option? does anyone have any info on the original mobo i posted about?

Dont need to worry about my win7 guys ;)
