Hi all,

Got a little problem that I am hoping you guys can be able to help me out with. I cleaned out my PC and to do it as good as I could I decided to remove some items and then plug them back in again. But when I started my PC back up I got the following screen.

Code:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and click next

3. Click repair your computer.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

Status 0xc000000e

Info The boot section failed because a required device is inaccessible.

When I try to do a repair windows I get this message:

Code:

Now, the only hardware change is that I removed my Zalman Fan Controller, which I would like to think is not the cause to this problem. I guess I could do a fresh installation but that would mean losing everything on present installation and was hoping that maybe one of your PC wizard's here might be able to help me out! Any additional information you might need please let me know.

As always, all advice is highly appreciated!

Have you tried going into the BIOS and selecting "restore failsafe settings" or the equivalent option on your motherboard?

Nope, haven't done that. Had a look in the BIOS but couldn't see anything amiss, so didn't change anything there. Will have a look for "Restore failsafe settings" or the equivalent now, thank you!

Edit: That didn't help :(

I suggest doing a startup repair. Boot from your DVD and it's an option :)

I done that, the below is what I got for trying doing it. Also, it was really slow when I did it, took more then a minute before the "Choose Language" box appeared. If I remember right when I did the installation it pop up much quicker, but maybe I remember it wrong. Just incase anyone wonder I did mark the SATA cables when I removed them while cleaning, so I could set them back in the same place as they were before. Maybe that's the problem? That I removed the SATA cables and then added them again?

When fiddling with the pc, did you plug the sata cables back into different ports?

Could be some are set to AHCI and others are set to SATA or IDE and you've plugged them back into different ports.

Nope, I thought of that and I marked them so I could pot them back in the same post as they were in. For some reason that don't seem to have worked so well, see below. :(

Agree, some reference to boot problem in those screenies.

It wont work, I am getting the message as posted two posts above yours. :(

Thanks Burnsy, but I can't get into my XP Pro either so has no chance to access my Win7 drive.

On the other hand I am just trying an installation and of the 12 different partitions that should be showing I am only showed 5, neither of them my Win7 or XP Pro partion. By the looks of it it only detect one 500GB drive and one 1TB drive. The other 500Gb, 1TB and my 160GB Raid1 drives are not detected. Is there anyway I can make them show through the BIOS, or if I unplug the drives and try them one and one will that maybe work?

If your drives aren't showing in the BIOS it means you've either not plugged in the cables right, they're broken, or you've fudged a bios setting,

12 partitions!? crikey

I use 2 on system drives and 1 on all other drives.

Re-check all the cables, are you sure the boot information is on the correct drive? Just because W7 is installed on a drive doesn't mean that drive holds the boot info for it (unless it was the only drive plugged in during install)

He's getting bootloader problems so the primary drive has the bootloader on it, it's failing because 7/XP aren't installed on the boot drive so when windows tries to boot from the correct partition it can't locate it because it doesn't exist. Provided he can get the right drive hooted up the the right sata interface he'll be golden.

I have checked the cables, and they are all plugged in properly. I hope they not broken, that would mean 4 HD's broke for me all at once! Uhmm how can you fudge a BIOS setting?

I have 2 160GB drives in Raid1, 2 1TB drives, split up in partions, as well as 2 500GB drives, also split up. I have bought a hot swap bay and was going to just use different drives as and when needed, but then this happened and now I am a bit stuck!

As above, have doubled checked that the cables are correctly plugged in. UHmm no, can't say I am sure where the boot information is since I never actually looked for it, to be honest. I am guessing though that it is on one of the drives that is not being detected by the system. And having that in mind, maybe unplugging them and using them one and one is not a good idea ehh.

Unfortunately it was not the only drive plugged in during the installation, but it will be the only one plugged in next time I do an installation. I have 2 320GB Drives on their way and by the looks of things, I think I will wait until I receive them and then just use them two in Raid1, installing my XP Pro and Win7 in a dual boot.

If I was to do the above and then later plug in the other drives, will Windows automatically detect the other OS's and let me dual boot (Or maybe it should be triple boot?) so I can just access them quickly and remove some documents and such before wiping them?

Sorry, was typing while you posted. So if I can leave the right 1TB or 500GB plugged in, since I am presuming you mean that one of them has the bootloader on them but they can't find my win7, (which by the way is on the other 500GB drive which is not being detected) then I might be able to get it all up and running again you mean?

Pretty much yeah, now I don't know a whole bunch about how the bootloader works or how it assigns drives partitions (my knowledge is all based on LILO/GRUB but they all do effectively the same thing), however provided the correct drive with the win7 bootloader on it is set as the primary boot device and you can get the actual drive with the operating systems on it recognised you will either be able to directly boot from said drive or will at the very least be able to fixboot/fixmbr your way to success from the recovery cd and then
add the drives one by one until you have everything either running or work out what is going wrong.

I'd start by getting the boot drive and the os drive on known working interfaces and work from there personally.

*Quietly walks into this thread, hoping no one will notice me..*

This fault was all down to user error.. :o:o:o I did check all the SATA cables both 2 and 3 times but for some reason never checked the power cables, when I was about to do the above suggestion from Hairybudda I realized that the power cable to one HD wasn't inserted properly, so checked them all and of course there was another one that wasn't done properly. :o:o Made sure they were all properly inserted into the HD's and then turned it on and viola! Its now working as it did before! Feeling like a total n00b for making such a error! :o
