Okay, I'm about ready to buy my new computer parts from OC (actually I already bought the speakers because I found some in B-grade for £50!) so need a last minute check to make sure it's all compatible. Also I'd quite like it to be quiet so perhaps some advice on that too...

CPU - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
Motherboard - Abit AB9 Quad GT
RAM - Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 (2GB)
Graphics Card - EVGA 8800 GTX (quiet?)
Harddrive - Western Digital WD4000AAKS 400GB
Harddrive - Samsung 500GB
Power Supply - Corsair 620W (whisper quiet)
Optical Drive - NEC DVD-RW
CPU Cooler - Noctua (quiet?)
**Case - Akasa Eclipse 62
**Cooling - Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan (x2)
Mouse - Death Adder
Keyboard - Cherry (105) Black
Speakers - Abit digital 2.1 (loud!)

**Recommendations

So how can I make this quieter? Is there anything that is not compatible?

I only want to tweak the spec on the above conditions - I'm happy with the price.

Thanks.

But the harddrives in the spec - I know the samsung is supposed to be very quiet and I read that, the aaks were a good trade off between performance and noise.

I doubt there is really much difference in terms of performance between samsung, wd and seagate really... might just go for what's in stock ultimately!

Totally agree, The reason why i picked two of the same drives is since you can RAID them. You wouldn't have any problems with RAID with 2 Hard Drives the same. Though with 2 different drives you could run into a few problems.

Unless of course your not going to put them in RAID?

None the less a very, very nice spec you have their. :)

Not sure about raid, I've never done it before, why is raid a good thing? I'm planning on using the E-SATA ports on my mobo for external storage & backup once 1TB external drivers are a reasonable price.

I'm second guessing that the point of RAID is it's good backup? Although, maybe I should just let you tell me.. ;p

If you want a silent heatsink, why not try a Scythe Ninja Rev B. ?
Which can be used with the fan on, or without.
You can get pretty good temps without the fan on.

RAID-0. This technique has no redundancy of data. It offers the best performance but no fault-tolerance whatsoever. If you lose one drive, the whole array will fail. At least 2 drives needed

RAID-1. This type is also known as mirroring and consists of at least two drives that contain duplicates of your data. There is no striping for extra write performance but read performance is improved since either disk can be read at the same time. At least 2 drives needed

They are the two main RAIDs users normally use.

Take a look at this, might help a bit more.

I read this review about the scythe "awesome glad i got it very large tight fitt in my antec 900 gaming case. had to cut a corner of a new fan to get the side window on " which worried me a bit. Although not sure the noctua will fit either!

Get Crucial Ballistix PC5300 - cheaper, and you don't need PC8500. The Ballistix is probably as good anyway.

I'm not sure how "silent" the 8800 cooler will be. By all means try it first, but you may want to invest in a Thermalright HR-03 PLUS and a silent 90mm fan.

If you're serious about silence buy some Seagate 7200.10 drives, and some Silentmaxx HDD enclosures.

Don't get the Antec 900. All those fans are terribly noisy. Get a Lian Li PC7+ or Akasa Eclipse/Mirage and some nice quiet 120mm fans by Scythe, Noctua, Zalman, Yate Loon or Arctic Cooling. :)

if you turned the ninja around 90° u wouldnt have needed to cut any corners off the fan

Good advice I'm changing my case to the Akasa Eclipse and also purchasing 2 120mm Noctua fans.

edit: I appreciate the seagate advice, but I had a bad experience with them in the past so don't really want to go there!
