Advice needed: Upgrade CPU

Okay. What about the overclocking side of things? If you can ease my mind with that then I'll give it a shot. Lol.

Just by going into the Bios and upping the multiplier to 42, will give you an OC of 4.2Ghz without having to change voltages. But if you wish to go higher, then it can get a little more complicated. But should you wish to go higher, then like everyone else, you need to do a little research on Overclocking. You can also open a thread in the Overclocking forum, where the guys in there will only be to happy help with tips and advice. Just remember, we were all in the same position as you at one time.

Okay when I get paid I'm going to get the basket you sent with the new case. Last question. Thermal paste? Do I need it when mounting the fan?

The cooler should come with paste already applied. Good luck and don`t forget, we are here if you have any problems or if you are unsure of something. ;)

I get paid on Tuesday and will take the plunge with this package then:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Case - Black £64.99
1 x Thermalright HR-02 Macho CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366) £39.98
Total : £389.05 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Has anyone got any other suggestions for a basket? FSX is CPU dependant so I need something I can overclock to around 4.5GHZ. Baring in mind I have no prior experience with overclocks or cpus!

Thanks again. Like the basket you sent me. After a lot of research it looks the best option to me. I'll order tomorrow morning. Been reading on OC the 3570k. Seems leaving everything else on Auto and changing the multiplyer to 42 gets a stable 4.2GHZ. Do you recommend turning TURBO off and stuff with that? I've had a quick look at adjusting VCore voltages and keeping them below 1.35V with the Ivybridge. However this is going into territory I know nothing about. Anymore advice on a potential overclock would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Idleman. It looks so hard to fit! I don't think I can do this lol. Fitting CPU and motherboard maybe but the cooler looks a pig!

I have the 612S installed at the moment. At the weekend, I just helped someone build his new system and he had the Macho. And between the both of them the Macho is the easier of the 2 to install.

Good choice of spec, I feel like I am a broken record saying this but the i5 3570K and Z77 combo is nigh on unbeatable for gaming.

You will be able to ahceive an easy 4.2GHz OC using that set up too which will net great gains :D

To overclock is it just setting multiplyer to 42 and leaving everything else to auto?

A little bit more complex than that.

In theory you could but auto setting generally aren't the best and are un-optimised. With auto voltages this means they usually get overvolted.

The video in the link I posted pretty much covers all that and tinytom does emphasize the importance of not leaving Cpu voltage on auto. All in all, it is a very good guide, especially for beginners.

I didn't watch the video :p

Nice to know we are all singing from the same hymn sheet however!
