Hi all,

I've always played the previous GTA's and loved them, especially Vice City. I'm desperate to play GTA IV like the rest of you but I don't have an XBOX 360 or PS3. I'm currently saving for a high end PC I want to build around Crimbo time but with GTA IV out next week I just know I'm going to hate not being able to play it. I've thought about getting an XBOX 360 but to get the best out of it I'd also need to buy an HDTV, which is more expense.

So, do I get a console and new TV and put my PC off a bit longer or do I wait, save and play GTA IV on my new PC when it's released around October time?

If I get a console, which one?

Thanks,

RoEy

LOL Nismo! Very true mate. If I get an HDTV though I'd also like to use it for bluray movies, which makes me think to get a PS3 but I do prefer the XBOX 360. That way my wife wouldnt mind me getting a new TV because she'd be getting use out of it too. Ahhhhhh so many choices!

On what system did you play the previous GTAs?

I've always played them on PlayStation, im a bit gutted that this time around im stuck with a 360 instead of a PS3. I like playing this kind of game with the DualShock

Get a console.

As for which one. Look into what games are currently out and what are coming out as to which one appeals to you more.

If there are not many PS3 exclusives that you're interested in then get a 360 and vice versa. Also, it has been said that currently titles that are released on both consoles, the 360 version tends to be a little better. I have no experience of this, just what some others have said.

Also, 360 Live service I have heard to be better than the PS3 (I have not tried the PS3 one, only going on what others have said) However, to play online you need to pay between £20-40 a year for a Xbox Live Gold subscription, whereas the PS3 online services are free.

The PS3 has a Blu-Ray player, which is great for watching Hi-Def movies if that is your thing. The Xbox is also known to be a little noisy, although this is not an issue for me, it is something to consider if you have sensitive hearing or aren't able to have the sound up too loud.

Another thing worth mentioning is the controllers. IMO, the 360 controller is far superior is every way, from the analogue positioning, to the triggers, the weight, the feel etc. This is of course just my opinion.

Another point, Xbox 360 are known to not be very reliable. Although this has improved over recent months, there are still many consoles getting 3RROD (3 red ring of death)
Microsoft have a 3 year warranty on consoles for this problem, and I have recently had to have my 360 repaired and the service was fantastic, I had it back in about 2 weeks. So not a huge issue really.

This is a touchy subject, but for me, the achievement system on the 360 is awesome, and very fun. I am not a GamerPoint whore, but I do enjoy going after some of the achievements. In many cases they have meant the games last longer as I want to beat them and get as many achievements as possible. Not to brag, but just for personal pleasure :D

My final point is the price. The 360 is generally cheaper, and you can pick up a premium with a game for under £200 now which is awesome. However, if you factor in the fact that the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player that does kind of make up the extra cost. If the Blu-Ray is not something you need/want, the cost may be something to consider.

I hope that helps.

Don't worry about the TV initially. You could get a £150 Xbox360 Arcade and play in standard definition.

For a year and a half with my 360 I just used a Sony 21" telly, and the quality is still amazing compared to previous consoles, although now I have a HD TV and use 720p but that wasn't purchased specifically for games playing as there isn't really any games out there just now that have sparked an interest.

If you really want to play GTA4 just get the xbox on it's own, it won't make too much of a dent in your budget for a high end PC later on in the year.

I used a 360 on a normal CRT for over a year, it really isn't that bad. Perfectly playable and still 100 times better looking than a PS2.

Only problem I had with the 360 on an SD tele, was the text in some games could be very hard to read.

So a week after getting my 360 I got an HD tele.

Not too bothered about HD, as DVD's look pretty good to me played through 360 over HDMI, so will simply wait til standalone Blu-Ray players are under £100.

there are loads of threads asking this

i flipped a coin as i own both
i reckon you should go 360 as the console is cheaper

i ordered mine on ps3 because... well i just did!

Exactly the same mate.

Dead Rising was unplayable on a SD television for me as I couldnt read any of the writing.

Thanks for your advice lads, really appreciate it! Might just get an xbox 360 and play in SD for a bit then upgrade TV later.

Once again, thanks for all your help.

You could also run the cheap Xbox through VGA to your PC monitor for HD goodness :)

Cheap addition to your gaming setup.

+ a zillion

Is it this time of the day again?

Get what ever you want, why do you need our opinion??

If yo uwant a PC, you'll have to wait for GTA to come out on PC.

In terms of consoles, buy one which your most and best friends play on too, this will ensure you have someone to MP with.

You don't need a tv. You can hook up to an LCD, or use standard SCART. VGA output is very good, SCART is standard, hence not great for HD games.

Hmm if I got a PS3 and wanted to connect that to my iiyama 22 inch monitor what cable would I need? Would it be hd? THe max resolution it goes to is 1600 by 1200. Also I have 5.1 megaworks speakers, how would I connect the PS3 to the monitor and speakers?

you would need an HDMI-DVI cable. However your monitor must support HDCP. It would be HD. Not sure about speakers, do they have an optical in?

My speakers are Creative Megaworks 5.1, I dont really know if they have optical in (or what that is :P). I got the monitor and speakers in 2002 I think if that helps. Would it be worth connecting the PS3 up this way, rather than using a 26 inch JVC tv?

I have my speakers plugged into my X-FI sound card atm.
