Hi Guys,
I have joined your forum to ask for advice on a new system I would like to build (my first) I am getting on in years and I find all the technical stuff confusing but would like to have a go at a build. The computer I have now is an old athlon xp 2600 based system which I had given a few years back (my first ever pc) which is now showing its age.
I use my computer for general bits and pieces, a bit of photo editing browsing the web use corel draw 8 occasionally etc etc. As this pc is going to have to last a long time do I save up my pennies and go for a i7 build.
I would be grateful for your advice as to what I should do and what components I should buy.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
Mike.

Hi Guys,
Thank you for your replies.
I already have a 19" lcd monitor and xp home 32 bit.
As I said this system will have to do me for some years to come so I would rather save up and have a bit of future proof if there is such a thing in computing!
It would be nice to have knowledge like you guys as to what components all work together.
Thanks again.
Mike.

Future proof computers don't exist.
i7 is very expensive for rather little gain at the moment, and if a 500 quid system and a 1200 quid one feel the same as each other now they'll feel the same in 5 years time.
i7 is for workstations and enthusiasts. People use them for gaming but I'm not really sure why, I don't think you want one.

There is no need for i7 systems unless you do a lot of video encoding etc, or just have money to burn, get an intel duo core set up or maybe amd phenom II 720 set up, both will be around £500 mark and you won't tell the difference between that and i7 in day to day use.

Thank you for your reply

Hi,
Thank you for your advice. What would you advise for a general purpose Pc.
I am not a gamer but a pc with the capability to play the odd mild game would be nice.
As I am a total novice with all this would you be kind enough to advise me as to what I should buy.
Many thanks,
Mike.
