I am looking to upgrade from my 550D, i have a good collection of L lenses and im wondering if the mkII is worth the upgrade given it can be got for less than £1500. I do a lot of video too, so will going to a full sensor over crop make a huge difference for video?

What are you L lenses?

Jumping to a FF sensor may mean you need to spend more than £1500, you will lose the wide end you already cover now, unless you have a 8-15, 16-35 or 14mm prime already.

Have you checked out the 650D? it's supposed to be really good on video.

Also, if you don't have one already, get a Zacuto Z-finder for whichever camera you have, it is a great tool for video DSLR shooting.

Can't say I've done much video with my 650d but some of the video features like continuous AF need one of the two new STM lenses (40mm pancake or 18-135mm)

Oops got it backwards, you lose the reach instead.

Nothing wrong with the 50/1.4 as it is a bit of a bargain really and I am sure you know the 17-55 won't work on the 5D

Yeh, it is really a toss up between the 2, buy the 5D or buy the 17-55 and another lens, i am leaning towards buying more glass over the 5D, i just wanted to know how much the gains are from buying the 5D.

Better controls springs to mind. A heavier body too. Thought the 550D was a good body by all accounts.

My understanding is that the 550D sensor is not so far behind the newest Canon crop sensors and my philosophy is to upgrade camera bodies at a much slower rate than lenses (although it is no use have lenses that are far superior to your camera limiting your lens investment).

If I was in your shoes I would invest in some glass that will work on FF and wait until Canon release their entry level FF or 5DMKIII prices go down. I think it is not a good time to buy a 5DMKII right now, the new entry level Canon FF should be much closer to the 5DMKIII with a robust AF and metering system.
At the least it will mean 5DMKII & III prices drop a little and you will have more choice.

a lot of the features that the 650d has seem to be aimed at video but I can't say I've tested them out much on mine! The touchscreen is awesome and can be very helpful since it flips out and can be angled in a variety of manners.

650d and 5d Mk3 aren't really comparable though so if you're looking for a big upgrade rather than just catching up with the tech then I wouldn't look at the 650d.

Might have to get some test movies recorded! Theres a few on youtube but they always seem a bit pants :/
