hello all,

i am looking to get a golf of some type. i like the golf gti mrk3 and dont wanna waste all my money on a mrk4. what are the mrk3s like? any common problems?
i am 20 with 2 years ncb. how will it cost to insure?

what engine size would you like for example the gti will cost more to insure than a 1.3 and tbh the mk3 sucks imo........... fat overweight and slow, only thing that saves the mk4 is the 1.8t engine
saying that though a mk3 vr6 is ok but still not great still heavy and needs mods to make it go around corners

They are ok, comfortable subtle styling of quite good quality, quite reliable as well. The GTi badge is not really well deserved, the 2.0l 16v engine is quite good a good reliable lump, pumping out 115bhp iirc but on a car that weighs over 1000kg, its not going to have great performance and that GTi badge is going to make the insurance companies foam at the mouth.

As to niggling problems its basically look for rust and knackered gearboxes.

Have you looked at an Audi A3 or a BMW 316 or 318? :)

bmw 316/318?
please dont :/

if you want a golf gti then go for the big bumper mk2 16v imo.

yeah get a late mk2 gti 16v much better than the mk3 proberly not quite as well built but actually has gti performance and does go around corners

My mate has a Mk3 GTI 16v, its a fairly nice car, seems well enough built and goes ok, but my other mates Mk2 16v GTI was quicker and handled better although felt very dated even compared to the mk3. Even the mk3 is quite dated now, the youngest will be around 8-10years old now.
Insurance shouldnt be any real problem, I insured a 106GTi younger than that, and my friend is insuring his VTS at 19without any NCB.

The low range 3's are a tad gutless but they dont half drive well, looking atcars like this you cant go far wrong with something like a 318i

I would not say it is gutless, its not powerful but the engine is certainly capable, it will shift when it needs to, I think the ride quality is superb I have been in it for 8 hours straight and it is very comfortable. :)

Its a company car so its a poverty spec version but still very nice. :)

318iS maybe. but not a 316 or 318 :/

like you said - poverty spec. for the same price you could get a much better car but with a different badge :]
also, im guessing that the company car would be a new one, rather than an e36.

MaXXeH - how much is your budget?

For the money of the 316 (in fact 3.5k less) you could have a Fabia VrS! Awesome car :D

he doesnt want to stretch to mk4 gti, which is about the same as a fabia vrs..
how would he get one for £3500?

i got 20k inhertence(spelling) of some of you may no..
but only wanna spend a max of 2.5k wanna save the rest for a house.
2.0 GTi 16V 5d 150bhp 0-60 = 8.0

i was looking at this one
what you lot think?

The Mk3 16V is 150bhp. It's the 8v that's 115bhp.

They're getting a bit old now. Check around the tailgate and rear doors for rust. Watch the insurance tbh - they're Group 16!

The mk3 16v GTI isn't bad, but is looking a bit dated now. However I'd go for the mk2 myself, though is even older :p

Please don't go down the 316/318 route - seriously.
