Yes, i need your advice on some advice i received from SOE.

I downloaded the SWG 10 day free trial to see if the game has gone as downhill as ive been told.

I double click the downloaded installer and i get this:

Setup has experienced an error.

Please do the following:
- Close any running programs
- Emptry your temporary folder
- Check your internet connection (internet-based setups)

Then try setup again.

Error Code: -6003

Ive done what was requested but i still get the same problem.

I got in touch with SOE tech support and they sent me this back:

Thanks for contacting Sony Online Entertainment.

Make sure you are not running any programs on your windows taskbar. If the
problem persist you should try running your system under a clean boot as this
will prevent any hidden programs from loading.

To disable background programs:

1.Select the START button.
2.Select RUN.
3.Type in "msconfig" (without the ")
4.Press OK
5.Select the STARTUP tab.
6.In the list, uncheck all boxes EXCEPT for SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY. If you
use Windows XP, please note that SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY will not be listed
- just uncheck the entire list.
7.Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again.

Now all my knowledge is self-taught, i can usually solve a problem on a PC but ive never had much experience over startups. As i understand this, SOE are advising me that i should either boot my PC with no antivirus or firewall running bearing in mind i need to be connected to the internet to install and run the game, or that i completely format my HDD and start from scratch just to play this demo.

Am i right?

Clearly they want to make it easier for hackers to attack your machine, badly coded rootkits weren't an open enough invitation

To be honest nearly all games publishers will give you the same BS. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with some muppet from EA when I couldn't get a C&C game to install.

He kept on telling me it was because my computer wasn't good enough to play the game. I kept on telling him that my PC was brand new and according to the recommended spec my PC was overkill. Absolute tard he was.

I have now refused to buy any EA software, as they wanted me to uninstall pretty much every CD burning application as well as Daemon Tools when BF2 would not run, giving the error about anti-copy protection software being active.

I had disabled everything, and still wouldn't work and they asked me to do the same thing to my system as you, so I asked them in an email if they are willing accept liability for anything which might happen to my machine given I play the game all the time, hence my PC would be in an unprotected state connected to the Internet (as it is predominantly an online game).

Funnily enough, no response from them.
