Hi folks,

I have a 2014 Honda Civic 1.8L with a start-stop engine, reg WJ14 KPG, VIN SHHFK2760DU006548. I need a replacement starter battery, but I'm getting conflicting info basically everywhere I turn - various part shops, AI agents, even the mechanic I usually use. Some are saying I need an AGM battery like the Yuasa YBX9028, some are saying an EFB like the YBX7072. Some say I could use either, and that an AGM is just an upgraded version of the EFB, some are saying it must be EFB for my start-stop. The car was purchased second-hand with a 7072 battery (not the OEM part), the start-stop worked for a while but hasn't in a long time.

This is driving me nuts! Could anyone assist, please?

Call your local Honda dealer parts dept and see what they offer when you give them the details.

AGM is superior to EFB so I'd say the advice that you must have EFB over AGM because of the stop start is cobblers and that the advice that you could use either technology is correct.

I tried this first, they only give me the info that it's an "L2" battery, which I think refers to size rather than anything else.

My Volvo has stop start so AGM battery.

After a lot of digging the cheapest place to get any sort of reputable battery, was actually from Volvo themselves for the Volvo branded battery.

That is usually the last place I would look.

Worth calling your local Honda dealer you never know....

Volvo assist just replaced my main 95Ah 850CCA battery, £300 fitted for a genuine Volvo part including resetting the BMS, this was only £80 more than Halfords and that was for the parts only.

So ask Honda.

Thanks all, I've asked Honda direct and they want nearly twice what it would cost for me to buy the part and have my usual mechanic fit it.

Interestingly, Varta list the AGM as an upgrade over the EFB, but Yuasa (who I think are actually the OE which Honda uses) only lists the EFB as suitable when I give them my reg.

AGM is listed for electrical heavy cars with more loads, or cars which which are expected to do loads more stop start trips.

EFB will be fine, just make sure you get the right Ah and CCA.

AGM will likely be undercharged if your cars charging system is optimised for EFB.
