Current specs:

Radeon R9 290
Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 mobo
TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply
BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 air cooler

After working way too much over the festive period I’ve decided to upgrade my monitor and card for some 1440p/144Hz gaming action. I am thinking on splashing out on the PG278QR 1440p/165Hz monitor plus probably an RTX 2080, so question is will my CPU become a bottleneck? I’m not planning on playing any really recent games yet, I have a backlog of a good few 3-4 year old games I want to get through first so can o hold off on getting a new CPU for a little longer or just upgrade it now? If now, any suggestions? Should I replace my RAM?

Thanks guys

It would depend on what games you play really. Is your 4670k overclocked? If not it should get to around 4.4Ghz if the board is capable of it. You could buy a decond hand i7 4790k in and overclock it but don't pay silly money for one. I sold mine on Ebay in November for £190 but I wouldn't pay that much for one myself. If they are still around that price it would make more sense to sell the motherboard/cpu/memory and buy a up to date AMD Ryzen cpu/motherboard/DDR4. If you are thinking of replacing your memory anyway I would just bite the bullet and upgrade the lot. A Ryzen build may not cost as much as you think plus you should still get a fair price for your current cpu/motherboard/DDR3 to go towards the cost.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £368.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Ok i think the new ram and mobo is a good idea but not sure about the CPU, would it be worth spending a bit extra on one to futureproof or will the one you’ve linked do fine? I don’t have a clue about Overclocking so not gonna be doing that in a hurry

unless your going to use the onboard GPU i would go for the 1600x, it costs less the soldered IHS mean the run a little cooler and perform just the same

i see you ask the question
Should I replace my RAM

if you not planning the replace your ram then the only option for you is but a 4790k

There is no onboard gpu on Ryzen apart from the 2200G and 2400G APU's. All Ryzen 2000 series cpu's are soldered apart from the two APU's that I have listed which have thermal paste.
