This has been on my mind for years. And I finally want to look into it in a serious way.

FYI, as it might help
I'm 37,
IT business Intelligence/ business analyst job.
No kids.
Molecular biology degree 2:1

In next 3 years ish I'll be wanting to move house and if I don't do it now not sure if I ever will.

I believe my broad job (IT section) is on the long term skills list. But in the requirements an IT related degree is a requirement? Is it really the case? I mean very few IT professionals I know have an IT related degree

I'd like to know what's the best way to progress this seriously?

Do you apply for jobs/sponsorship?
Are there any organisations to talk to that help people emigrate?
Is it better to go over on a Temporary visa?

As I said, this is very much starting the process. I have no idea if it's even possible.

Any advice on where to start would be great.

Looks like the points requirements for the Skilled Migrant permit have increased to the point that you pretty much need a job offer. There's plenty of into on the NZ immigration site to get you started.

NZ has always been easier to emigrate to than Australia.

If I was you I'd be looking up New Zealand job search sites, and then having a holiday over there.

Paging @wez130 ....

Biggest issue I hear for emigrating to NZ seems to be ridiculous property prices. I suspect you'll get a very nasty surprise compared to what you're used to.

Yes, I'm aware and may be an issue. Would depend on what salary I'd get over there. I mean it's another potential deal breaker, cost of living.

I personally prefer New Zealand to Australia. It just feels more culturally diverse and a bit less insular for some reason. That said, I'd be quite happy to move to Australia as well. I just think New Zealand is more my type of culture and place.

Was hoping it would have relaxed, looks like it has in Oz. But NZ is so desirable.

I probably wouldn't go over (for more than a holiday) without a job offer anyway. But if its easier to go out on some temp visa, that's what I need to look into.

Family member did it recently in their 20s. Went from UK on a work visa, then got residency, then permanent residency after 2 years I think.

They said it was all pretty easy & I don't think they had a key skill.

Oh wow. So they went out.. Just managed to get and keep a job?

It'd be best if you get a job before going out. It'll be easier to apply for residency once you're there, a lot more straight forward then.

Auckland is overpriced and overrated, it's just another city. I'd recommend the South Island. Not as hot but it's lovely.

It's been battered by floods and the recent cyclone so be prepared to learn to respect the old mother earth. Earthquakes do suddenly put it into perspective just how insignificant you are too.

But yeah, give it a go, nothing to lose.

It's both a good and bad thing but living there the rest of the world feels like it doesn't exist most of the time.

I'm not a city person anyway. I'd rather live where its quieter. Really. I'd probably end up where work was anyway.

UK is too busy for me. Too many people. Too busy and crowded

More remote suits me well

Easiest way.... Get a NZ partner haha!

Ummm, Firstly, NZ is as expensive, or as inexpesive (property wise) as you want it to be, Sure, Aucklnad has a median price hovering around $1m these days, and that's after a crash in the last 6 months, that won't last forever though, however, consider west coast of south island (Greymouth / westport) and you can get a lot more house for under $500k, however, location is everything, and weather, frankly is (usually) a lot wetter in that area, i say usually, because prety much everywhere has been a lot wetter than average this past 10 months!
I'd suggest going to one of the immigration NZ seminars back in UK who will give you a good insight into everything involved in moving over here, from moving companies, sponsorship, pension specialists, banking, and even people qualified in sorting out your visas. Your best bet is abviously looking at jobs on the skills shortage list (https://skillshortages.immigration.govt.nz/) and going from there. Your wifes health, if diagnosed could be a problem too as Azza says, INZ don't want to bring in a burden to the already pretty fragile healthcare system!

A lot of us make the permanent move out her and after a few months they regret it, so many move back to UK, so I would suggest that you come out here for an extended holiday first, but don't treat it as a holiday, make an effor to try and live like a kiwi would, except for going to work obviously, and see if it will fit your lifestyle, try and make friends etc, then decide whether it si for you or not. Me, i personally love it here, but i've been pretty lucky, both with where I live, and with work, even though i'm only a chef, i'm still comfortable financially!
I'm in a bit of a rush atm but I can always add to this post later so keep an eye out, also, if you have any specific questions, i'm happy to answer them to the best of my ability too! I'll try and add some basic living costs for you too!

Appreciate the reply.

Yeah I assumed if gf and me do last and her health is classed as a disability then that would kill things.

But if a.. She gets better, or b.. The relationship doesn't last long I'd hope its a possibility.

Have a queon skills list. I fall under the huge IT banner. But there is a requirement for a computer related degree. Is this the case? Or would finding a job bypass this?

Also. I've been interested for a while as to what the main reason for people leaving is.
Really. I can't see me not liking it. Just because of what I love and what I want.

If this is genuinely viable I will absolutely come over for an extended "holiday".
