Advice on graphics upgrade!. 4830 CF or single 4870?

Hi there,

So, I've currently got a HIS 4670 1GB card, built this machine on a budget, so that was all I could afford at the time, I'm looking to upgrade nicely now.

My question is, what do you think is better, a single 4870, or a pair of 4830's in CFX?. I have a GB MA-790FX DS4 mobo, so I can only do CF in x8, but reading some reviews of 4830 in CF, it destroys a GTX 260. Theres also the hassle of setup issues support etc. Any ideas on whats the better buy? PSU isnt a problem, I've got a Hiper 800w.

Only if the game supports CF, other than that the 260 destorys the 4830.

I would get yourself a single 4890 if you game at high res.

Yeah go for a single card solution, the 4890 is obviously top of the ATI heap at the mo, so there might be some mileage in waiting a while to see if 4870 prices dip a bit more. Whatever card you do go for get the 1Gb version as the extra video ram can help at higher res.

I can't see any decent CF reviews other than one which I thought wasn't comprehensive enough.

As you can see from my sig, I do have 4830s in crossfire and they tackle whatever I throw at it but in all fairness I'm not a gamer so I don't know what I'm looking for

However on the gflop front (which is what I'm using the cards for) it's a different story... With the overclock it kills everything including the 4890. EASILY !

ps As others have suggested... Start with a single 4870 as it'll give you scope for upgrades in the future

This. Messing around with SLI/Crossfire is a false economy unless you're chasing world records.

unles you have a bucket load of time and money a single card should do all you need what res you play on as that is important to the card you need
smaller the monitor smaller the card needed
