Advice on graphics upgrade from 8800gtx

Good evening all, been lurking for a while and thought I would finally ask for some advice.

Firstly some base specs.
4gb ram @ 800
8800gtx
2.4 e6600 @ 3.1 watercooled

Now my 8800 has done me proud, but at the naitive 1650x1080 (or whatever it is) it's beginning to drop below 25 fps in some games.

I have the cash and psu to manage a gtx 285, but I'm wondering...is it worth it?? Or should I wait and just drop down to 1400x900???

Also do CPU is clocked at 3.1 with no upping of the voltage and is stable at 30 deg under load....how high do you think I should push it or be happy at 3ghz???

Ta!!

gtx285 seems a bit overkill imo for that res. What about upgrading to a 4870 512/1gb. quite a bit cheaper but still a decent upgrade on your current card.

Just been doing some further browsing and it's 4870 vs 285. I'm hampered by the inability to buy things sensibly. Hells highway and empire total war all running g below 25 fps. :-(

If you can live with ATI then right now the 1gig 4870 on offer seems like your best bet as much as I hate to say it... or if you want to spend money the 4870X2 tho for 1680x that might be a little overkill unless your a framerate junky.

Personally tho I'd be buying a 260 maxcore or a 280 if I could find one comparably priced.

Oh god no, not ATi.

Uh, I thoroughly recommend the product I already own. That is to say the XFX 4870 1GB. It was a good deal for me at £184 when I bought it (a month ago. :\), and the current price is even better.

Funny that, I was just thinking of a single-card replacement for my 2x8800 SLI cards (noise + heat + SLI randomness. Ugh.)

Any recommendations? Preferably not more than £300. I would prefer ATI as I have more confidence in them, but I'll take an nvidia if it's obviously a better offering.

Oh, the intended res is 1920x1200 :)

i used to have a xfx 8800gtx xxx extreme

i upgraded to a nvidia 260 big differance and there priced right

then i upgraded to a xfx 4870x2 wow what i card but not cheap
now i got two, and it just blue screens

stick to nvidia easyer drivers etc etc

260 will do you fine 285,or 295 dont bother

if you got over £300 get 4870x2

but if you got £200 got nvidia 260

sell ur 8800gtx on ebay £100 they go for, then buy a 260 its only cost you £100

sounds good to me

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice, I'll go for the ati. Just another quickie- do you need a crossfire comparable motherboard to go for an x2 card? I don't think my gigabyte board is though

Get an Xbox 360.
I have Bfg 8800gtx OC2, Q6600, 4 gig ram, vista premium 32bit, 1680*1050 res. Recently purchased a 360. I have Fifa 09 and GOW2.
I never thought I would as I was/still am an avid PC gamer with over 25 premium titles. However I have become dissilustioned with PC gaming as there seems little point upgrading from a 8800gtx as there are NO titles being released to utilise the power and got sick of buying crappy ports which ARE designed for consoles.
Just my opinion, mind you.

Heh, not as surprised as me :-)

I have a ps3, and had a 360 a while back, but all I ever did was play on my pc.

I'll be realistic, I'll be upgrading theblot in the next year so only need something to tide me over till then. And yes my 8800 does play fallout/far cry 2 flawlessley.

I'm looking forward to dragon age origins more than anything that looks worth a mid range upgrade ;)

Now off to the CPU forum to see if I can get another ghz out of my 6600.......
