Hi Guys,

I've finally found a replacement for the Astra.

http://www.vxronline.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=108119

How much do you think I should be offering him? I've stupidly always paid asking price for my past cars but I feel this isn't quite worth £16500. On a side note I'll be asking to put a holding deposit down until my VXR is repaired which shouldn't take longer than just over a week. I know I said I couldn't reach the pedals properly in this :o but this won't be for bumbling around in traffic so I can live with the slight stretch when using the clutch.

So how would I go about haggling? Simply offer a price and go from there?

Sod haggling for a car thats unsuitable - by your own admission! - instead find something that you can drive & control properly.

Power (even in a Vauxhall!) is nothing without control as the saying goes.....

It's not as bad for me as I've made out. I can easily fully disengadge the clutch it was just a slight stretch which would grow tiresome in heavy traffic.

Thats a tough one because this is by far and large the cleanest example I have found. I propably wouldn't let this one get away but I'd rather not pay asking if I could potentially get it for less.

Offer him a grand under what he is asking and see what he says.

Then go up 200 quid a time till your both happy.

plenty of other fish and all that,

pick a figure your happy to pay for the car- and a figure you'll pay but grudgingly for the car. go in slightly under your happy figure and hope he'll meet you somewhere in between :)

dont be discouraged and dont fall for the salesmans patter about oooh we've had lots of interest in this etc. its all tosh they use to try and hook you,

go see it but take someone with you who will slap you if you do a deal on the day - this is a bad idea. if you go see it and like it then go back a day or 2 later and do the deal dont rush into it and let your heart rule your head

ps are you trading anything in against it?

Iv never seen the point of going and coming back, if you want the car and can come to a price buy it i say.

done that many times in the past, and suffered buyers remorse.

sleep on it and if it still seems a great deal in the morning then by all means go for it ;)

This is a toy as I have a company car so the sub 15mpg doesn't bother me and the insurance is only £1200. As for parts they are a lot cheaper than you think plus this isn't a VXR8 so doesn't have the silly priced brakes.

Its actually reasonably priced. I wouldn't expect a huge amount taken off of it.

Is it even possible to suffer from buyer's remorse with a V8 under the bonnet?

Hell yes!

V8 or not.

I recently reluctantly turned down what I thought was probably the best e38 740i I have seen,'99 reg, one owner from new, FBMWSH, Cosmos Black, Black unmarked leather trim blah de blah. 57k miles from new.

The - private - seller wanted £9k for it. - about £3k - at least - over value imo...
